I have a doctoral degree in the subject of Biotechnology, wherein my thesis was entitled ‘Screening of Effluent Treatment Plant Metagenome for Novel Oxygenase’. I have a research experience of more than 9 years at Council of Scientific and Industrial Research: National Environmental Engineering Research Institute (CSIR-NEERI). I was invited at SKYE, Finnish Environment Institute, Finland, for a period of 3 months, wherein my goal was to analyze the microbial communities of Baltic sea-oil spill samples. At present I am working at the Mumbai Zonal Centre of CSIR-NEERI in the Director Research Division. Post-doctoral thesis submission this year my task this year involved a) analyzing microbial genes/pathway for various biogeochemical cycles for oil polluted marine sediment samples (Baltic Sea) and b) resilience of microbial communities in response to micropollutants (antibiotics) in Indian rivers. I believe this is an era of tremendous opportunity for microbial studies. These opportunities lie in both, engineering and the underpinning science. One of the core technologies in subject of aquatic ecology are the high throughput sequencing tools which have proved to be a blessing in the subject of microbial ecology in the last couple of decades. It is fortunate therefore that biology in general and microbial ecology in particular are in a golden age as revolutionary new methods are being developed that have given us an unprecedented ability to interrogate these communities. In the past I have used NGS technologies in engineered and non-engineered biological systems. Hence from an academics point of view, this position is an incredible opportunity for me as we must be at the very cutting edge of the new biology to create the new technologies required. The “double whammy” of outstanding scientific and societal impact leads to the academic research Nirvana of international recognition, sustained benefits to mankind and funding. Moreover, I have always had a particular desire to understand microbial functions in response to stress/varying environmental conditions.
