Interns @ OWSD
OWSD welcomes applications for internships in particular from students at education institutes in or near Trieste, Italy. In the past we have accepted students from the Institute of International Sociology in Udine and those doing a Masters in Intercultural Cooperation for Development ('Cooperazione Interculturale allo Sviluppo')
at the Università degli Studi di Trieste.
Each intern, in discussion with OWSD staff, receives tailormade terms of reference.
The first task is to become familiar with OWSD history, objectives and programmes, especially the OWSD fellowship programme.
Each intern will then receive training in one or more of the following:
- inputting and analysing data using a Filemaker database.
- processing and following up applications for fellowships via email
- procedures for awarding travel funds and organising travel to international conferences
- identifying and contacting past fellowship awardees ('alumnae') via email and telephone
- placing announcements and upates on facebook, the website and other social media
- undertaking relevant internet research
Free life time membership of OWSD!
How to apply: Go to the UNESCO website stageweb.unesco.org and fill out the relevant details.
When asked to put your preferred city, please put Trieste (or, if unavailable, Venice).

Emma Scandolo came to OWSD in July 2017 to carry out a full-time internship of 1 month. As intern, she assisted OWSD staff in several activities related to our fellowship programme. In particular she worked on crucial administrative tasks such as statistics and database as well as archiving and calculations. Emma also focused on OWSD Membership related issues such as applications processing and correspondence. The OWSD communications team benefited greatly from Emma’s swift and thorough work speed in the area of photo archiving and streamlining OWSD activities through her systematic approach and knowledge of programmes such as Excel and Microsoft Office. The internship helped Emma to gain practical experience in the broad world of NGOs and international cooperation with a focused perspective on gender equality and education within the UN initiated Millenium Development Goals (MDG). Emma is completing her BA in Economics and Business at Erasmus University, Rotterdam, NL.
Giada Salatin came to OWSD in February 2015 to carry out a part-time internship of four months. What past interns have said about working at OWSD:
I consider myself very lucky to have been involved with OWSD as it really expanded my horizons and solidified my interest in improving the possibilities for women in science. I was always motivated to do things on my own and everyone was very patient and helpful if I ever ran into any problems. I am incredibly grateful to have worked with everyone involved in the organisation as I learned something new from everyone.
Besides acquiring many skills, my internship helped me to feel more comfortable with my English and was certainly a great experience, which contributed to my personal growth. I will certainly remember my OWSD internship for all my life.
