The amino acids tryptophan and tyrosine, in the presence of the vitamin riboflavin, were photodecomposed by visible light. During the study of the photochemical events involved in these processes, it was possible to demonstrate that the photoproducts generated were toxic for biological systems. Studies are being undertaken for the use of these photoproducts for the treatment of tumours using photodynamic therapy, in view of their high toxicity for tumoral cells.
