Mapping and Population Size Estimation (MPSE) and integrated bio-behavioural surveillance survey (IBBSS) among men who have sex with men in Ghana (PI) Ghana AIDS Commission $ 908 099 Collaborative research project involving HSRC, Kwame Nkraumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST), Centres for Disease Control and Prevention, and Ghana AIDS Commission Study on Adult Health and Global Ageing (SAGE) (Co-PI) 2016 Follow-up survey of South Africa's first ever national epidemiological longitudinal ageing and health survey (SAGE) aimed at assessing chronic diseases and health systems needs of randomly selected 5,000 individuals aged 50+ years.

Research
Prof Nancy Refilwe Phaswana-Mafuya (PhD) is long serving Research Director (since 2005) at the HIV/AIDS/STI/TB Research Programme of the Human Sciences Research Council where she received CEO award in 2012, for exemplary, innovative and high quality work; Ubuntu Award in the same year for outstanding teamwork, collegiality and exceptional abilities; 5 year service recognition award (2010) and 10 year service recognition award (2015), Middle Researcher Excellence Award, in 2007, among others. Prof Phaswana-Mafuya is also Editor-in-Chief of the internationally accredited SAHARA Journal and Honorary Professor at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University. Prof Phaswana-Mafuya is a nationally and internationally recognized scientist with an outstanding scientific track record in HIV/AIDS and non-communicable diseases. She was inaugurated as member of the Academy of Science of South Africa (ASSAF) in 2008 and was recently appointed as member of ASSAF Council and ASSAF representative in the National Board of the International Council for Science (2016-2020). She was also recently appointed as an expert health sciences sub-panel member of the Department of Higher Education and Training to review scholarly books and conference presentations. Prof Phaswana-Mafuya is the National Research Foundation (NRF) C2 rated scientist (2012 to date). She became finalist in the National Science and Technology Forum awards, Senior Scientist category in 2012. She was appointed to serve as the Expert Group member of the Network of Academies of Science in Africa (2012 -2014) and member of the new member selection committee of the South African Young Academy of Science in 2012. She also served in the UNAIDS International Advisory Committee: “Think politically about HIV/AIDS” (2010), Member of the International AIDS Society Social and Political Research Advisory Group (2013), member of the South African Development Community (SADC) HIV Prevention and Research working groups (2009-2012). She is editorial board member of a number of journals, including: Annals of Infectious Disease and Epidemiology, African Journal of Physical Education, Sports, Recreation and Science, Annals of Chronic Diseases, Acta Criminologica, SM Gerontology and Geriatric Research Journal (SMGGR, Austin Aging Research, SM Journal of Forensic Research and Criminology (SMFRC), and JSM Nutritional Disorders. In her current position as Research Director, Prof Phaswana-Mafuya leads and co-leads large-scale novel epidemiological collaborative projects, mentors and supervisors postgraduate students from local and international universities. Her current collaborators include: Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (Ghana), National Institute of Chronic Diseases of the National Health Laboratory Services, Desmond Tutu HIV Foundation, University of Cape Town; Johns Hopkins University (JHU), Baltimore USA; Emory University, Atlanta (Georgia); University of California San Francisco, USA; and the Centres for Disease Control and Prevention.
