On 23 March, the Rwandan Association of Women in Science and Engineering (RAWISE), together with the OWSD Secretariat, celebrated the launch of the Rwanda OWSD National Chapter in Kigali.
On 23 March, the Rwandan Association of Woman in Science and Engineering (RAWISE), together with the OWSD Secretariat, celebrated the launch of the Rwanda OWSD National Chapter in Kigali, Rwanda. RAWISE, which will host the National Chapter, is a non-profit organization based in Kigali that aims to increase the number of women and girls in STEM fields in Rwanda and provide a platform for women scientists and engineers to meet, discuss and collaborate.
The launch event was held at the Lemigo Hotel, and was attended by the RAWISE organizers and other members, OWSD President Jennifer Thomson, OWSD Coordinator Tonya Blowers and other members of the OWSD Secretariat, 19 OWSD fellows, and the advisor to the Rwanda Minister of Education Dr. Marie Christine Gasingirwa, among many others. The event inlcuded speeches by Dr. Gasingirwa, Prof. Thomson, the President of the new National Chapter Dr. Didacienne Mukanyiligira, and others, followed by dinner and a cake cutting.
The launch itself was preceded by presentations of the East Africa National Assessments on Gender and STI to students at the new East African Institute for Fundamental Research (EAIFR), an ICTP partner institute, on Thursday, 22 March, as well as by presentations by the 19 OWSD fellows in attendance of their own experiences as women scientists, at the University of Rwanda.
