During the OWSD Visions project, I learned many different things including how to properly conduct an interview, how to take good video shots, and most importantly how to be focused. I have learned to be more focused and steady and this applies even in my daily life and career. I appreciate the opportunity given to me to part of this project.

The UNESCO Science Report 2021 was released on June 11. This seventh edition of the report monitors trends in science governance worldwide and explores how countries are using science to realize a digitally and ecologically smart future. The report contains a chapter on women in STEM,'To be smart, the digital revolution will need to be inclusive,' co-authored by OWSD Coordinator Tonya Blowers.

In this corner we highlight some of the most exciting recent achievements of our fellows, alumnae, and awardees. Way to go, ladies!

• Olubukola Oluranti Babalola, OWSD Vice President for Africa and a 1999 PhD fellow from Nigeria, was awarded a R1 200,000 (~US$90,000) research grant from South Africa's National Research Foundation to work on 'Application of Hypervirulent Bioinoculants to Combat Striga: Toward Parasitic Witchweed management.'


• Salina Banu, a 2000 PhD fellow from Bangladesh, was appointed a member of the Civil Society Advisory Group of UN Women Bangladesh for 3 years. She was also featured in a TWAS news article about how she has put the skills learned in a 2015 TWAS science diplomacy workshop into action as Chief Scientific Officer at the Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute.


• Champika Ellawalla Kankanamge from Sri Lanka and Samia Subrina from Bangladesh, both 2020 OWSD-Elsevier Foundation awardees, were named to the 2021 Asian Scientist 100 list by Asian Scientist magazine.


• Sahar Gamal Elbagir Mohamed, a 2016 PhD fellow from Sudan, has had a preprint of her paper, "Identification of Potential Drug Targets and Prediction of the Potential Impact of High Risk Non Synonymous Single Nucleotide Polymorphism in SARS-CoV-2 3C like Proteinase (3CLpro): A Computational Approach", published in the World Health Organization global literature on COVID-19.


• Michèle Stella Majoumouo, a 2015 PhD fellow from Cameroon, published an article, "Antiproliferative potential of methanolic and aqueous extracts and their methanolic fractions derived from fruits of Bersama engleriana against a panel of four cancer cell lines", , in Cogent Biology.


• Natalia Montellano Duran, a 2019 Early Career fellow from Bolivia, was a speaker at TEDx El Guereo in Sucre, Bolivia on May 22, presenting the talk "What we know that we do not know," about great scientific discoveries that changed humanity, and how we use knowledge derived from basic science without understanding the science itself.


• Maryse Nkoua Ngavouka, a 2018 Early Career fellow from the Republic of Congo, was nominated as a counselor to the Minister of Higher Education, Scientific Research and Technological Innovation, and was also selected to act as an editorial board member at the International Conference on Automated Planning and Scheduling (ICAPS) 2021.


• Mavis Owureku-Asare, a 2019 Early Career fellow from Ghana, was featured in several media outlets and publications including Citi Newsroom, GhanaWeb, and The Chronicle, for her work developing and teaching new techniques for tomato processing and marketing. She also discusses her work in an interview with Odana Network.


• Fathiah Zakham, a 2020 OWSD-Elsevier Foundation awardee from Yemen, has published a paper, "A strategy for SARS-CoV-2vaccination in Yemen", in The Lancet.
