Current Research Activities

Engineering sciences

Dr. Paola Jackeline Duque Sarango is currently engaged in several cutting-edge research projects focused on water resource management and environmental engineering. Her primary research activities include: UV-LED Water Disinfection: Development, experimentation, and pilot validation of UV-LED technology for sustainable water disinfection in rural communities. This project aims to optimize UV-LED wavelengths for effective pathogen inactivation, evaluate microbial reactivation mechanisms post-UV exposure, and implement a practical, energy-efficient solution tailored to the specific needs of remote areas with intermittent electricity supply. Water Quality and Public Health: Investigating the impact of riparian vegetation and forest ecosystems on water quality in river systems. This includes assessing the role of natural buffers in filtering contaminants and improving the overall health of aquatic ecosystems, with a focus on safeguarding water resources for rural populations. Sustainable Water Management Practices: Participating in interdisciplinary studies aimed at strengthening water resource management strategies in Ecuador and other Latin American countries. These efforts involve collaborative research to develop innovative, community-based approaches for water conservation, distribution, and treatment, in alignment with the United Nations' Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). Environmental Education and Outreach: Dr. Duque Sarango is deeply committed to promoting environmental science and engineering among young women. She leads workshops, seminars, and mentorship programs designed to inspire and support the next generation of female scientists, fostering gender equity in STEM fields.
