Current Research Activities

Structural, Cell and Molecular Biology

I am working on plant specialized metabolites with a particular focus on how these compounds are produced in plants (the enzymes responsible for their biosynthesis), their possible roles in plants (why plants produce them), how different they are from each other and how diverse they could be (their evolutionary relationships). I believe the elemental findings on these topics could be applied in agriculture and pharmaceutical industries. For all of this research, I am using techniques related to metabolomics, transcriptomics, molecular biology, plant tissue culture as well as genome editing techniques. Recently, I have also been studying the potential biological activities of these compounds and the structural features involved in these activities.

I am currently working as Associate Professor in the Universidad Regional Amazónica Ikiam in the Ecuadorian Amazonia. I work on plant metabolites occurring and plant biotechnology approaches that may help the development of the region.
