I am the head of the Acinetobacter baumannii Research Group working on mechanisms of resistance to carbapenems (carbapenemases and plasmids as its genetic support) and persistance in the hospital environment. The aim of our research is to adquire relevant knowledge about the mechanisms of multidrug-resistance of clinical isolates producing OXA-type carbapenemases and the global spread of resistant clones in our country, in Bolivia and Egypt and its relationship with human health and illness.

Current profession
Current professional activities type:ResearchTeachingI am the head of the Acinetobacter baumannii Research Group working on mechanisms of resistance to carbapenems (carbapenemases and plasmids as its genetic support) and persistance of multidrug-resistance isolates in the hospital environment. The aim of our research is to adquire relevant knowledge about the mechanisms of multidrug-resistance of clinical isolates producing OXA-type carbapenemases in our country and in Bolivia and its relationship with human health and illness. Current activities are the following: 1. Study of the mechanisms of multidrug-resistance clinical isolates of Acinetobacter baumannii causing fatal infections specially in immunocompromises patients, and their survival in the nosocomial environment: 1.1. Development of control strategies in the hospital: a) Rapid detection and characterization of new carbapenemases and their role in the resistance to carbapenem antibiotics (last therapeutic option); b) Genetic typing of multidrug-resistant isolates ; c) Plasmids, integrons and ISAba sequences as mobile structures related with the spread and overexpression of the resistance 1.2.Analysis of persistance strategies in the nosocomial environment and determination of the environmental conditions needed for the survival of A. baumannii under stress conditions 2. Identification of new targets to erradicate multidrug-resistant isolates. This area includes the study of enzymes laccases and their role in the persistance of A. baumannii in the hospital environment surviving treatment with disinfectants and toxic compounds.
