Localized calcium releases, called calcium sparks, which occur in these units are considered to be the elementary events in excitation contraction coupling. These elementary events play a crucial role in proper function of the heart. Imbalances in calcium levels can lead to arrhythmia, heart attack and certain heart diseases. Therefore it is important to understand the series of events involved in calcium release. Is involved in the development of a computational model of this system based on the experimental results of calcium ion movements observed by collaborators at the University of Maryland Biotechnology Institute.
