Characterization and genetic studies of indegenous bacteria involved in bioconversion of carbohydrates. Working on biotransformation of carbohydrates, isolated indegenous bacteria CMG713 which produces Dextran, a high molecular mass polymer of D-glucose. It is highly soluble, relatively stable and widely used in pharmaceutical industry as plasma volume expander and blood flow improver. Dextran is generally produced by growing cultures in sucrose containing media. The growing cells screat enzyme called Dextransucrase into the medium, where it converts excess sucrose into Dextran. It is a biopolymer with large number of applications in food, chemical and pharmaceutical industriesAffiliations
