Current Research Activities

Structural, Cell and Molecular Biology

As to the year 2020, I am working on various lines of research. Since for almost 20 years I worked mainly on aspects of cell biology and immunology of protozoan parasites, particularly Entamoeba histolytica / dispar and Leishmania mexicana. With E. histolytica I continue to study aspects of vesicular transport, specifically the role of EhRab21 and its relevance in pathogenic mechanisms. With L. mexicana we recently published an article in which we demonstrate that the 63 kDa glycoprotein (gp63) is responsible for presenting the activity of cyclooxygenase-2 (COX-2), the enzyme responsible for the production of prostaglandin E2 (PGE2). This is an important finding because this enzymatic activity can modulates the host’s immune response. Currently, we are studying the mechanisms by which this activity can modulate the host's immune response. To date, most of the projects in my laboratory are aimed at the study of Ovarian Cancer. In 2009, I began a transition towards the study of this pathology, by establishing a collaboration agreement with the National Cancer Institute, particularly with the Ovarian Cancer Group led by Dr. Dolores Gallardo-Rincón, through which, through out these years we have received support for obtaining patient samples, as well as the advice from Dr. Gallardo in the tutoring committees of my students. The projects in Ovarian Cancer are the following: - Participation of the PHF20L1 protein, a transcriptional regulator, in the progression of the epithelial ovarian cancer. - Characterization of fucosyltransferase 4 in cells exposed to ascitic fluid and its participation in the progression of ovarian cancer. - Phenotypic and functional characterization of T lymphocytes in a murine model of ovarian cancer. - Characterization of innate lymphoid cells and their role in tumor development in a murine model of ovarian cancer. Likewise, in collaboration with Dr. Arturo Vera of the Bioelectronics Section of the Engineering Department, we are working on a project aimed at seeking an improvement in the treatment of breast cancer through electrochemotherapy. The project in question is entitled “Evaluation of electrochemotherapy as a potential first-line treatment for primary invasive ductal carcinoma of the breast through the establishment of in vitro electroporation protocols and its transfer to an in vivo model”.

Current profession

At this moment I am at the Infectomics and Molecular Pahtogenesis Department at "Centro de Investigación y de Estudios Avanzados del IPN" (CINVESTAV, for short). I am a professor and have a research laboratory where I am the advisor of 5 Ph.D. students, two research technicians, and thres visiting students (social service from a B.Sc. program and from a M.Sc. program). I also participate giving some lectures during the courses for our M.Sc. students.
