GenderInSITE
Changing Perceptions in Science, Innovation, Technology and Engineering
GenderInSITE is a partner programme of OWSD and is an international campaign to promote the role of women in science, innovation, technology and engineering (SITE). Through workshops, data collection, surveys and reports, as well as targeted media coverage, GenderInSITE advocates for women to be involved at all levels of scientific research design and implemetation, as well as ensuring that women too are equal beneficiaries and users of new technologies.
Innovation is critical to a country's ability to adapt to changing circumstances and to remain productive and efficient. Yet, in many countries only half of the best ideas are heard – or even voiced. When women's needs and perspectives are taken into account, research shows that inventions are more relevant to a local community's needs and therefore more effective.
MISSION
To inspire transformative actions and more effective development by understanding the impacts of SITE on women and men and how women and men can contribute to STI.
STRATEGY
By working with networks of researchers and policy-makers, GenderInSITE members are first mapping local development challenges, then raising awareness about these challenges, then providing the tools and resources to address these challenges. Currently GenderInSITE has regional offices in Argentina, Kenya and South Africa and is planning to expand to Asia and the Arab region.
