OWSD Pakistan: From Vision to Venture: A Strategic Roadmap for Women’s Empowerment in STEAM

The Organization for Women in Science for the Developing World (OWSD) Pakistan National Chapter, in collaboration with The Karachi Institute of Biotechnology and Genetic Engineering (KIBGE), University of Karachi, commemorated the International Day of Women and Girls in Science through a seminar and panel discussion held on February 10, 2026.

The event aimed to highlight the role of women in advancing science, education, and leadership across diverse academic disciplines, while encouraging young women and students to pursue careers in STEAM fields. The programme brought together academic leaders, researchers, and professionals from various institutions to share their perspectives on empowering women through education, interdisciplinary collaboration, and institutional support.

The highlight of the event was a panel discussion featuring distinguished academic and professional leaders from multiple disciplines. The panellists included Prof. Bilquees Gul (Dean, Faculty of Science, University of Karachi), Prof. Zaeema Asrar Mohiuddin (Dean, Faculty of Management Sciences, University of Karachi), Prof. Yasira Naeem Pasha (Dean, Faculty of Civil Engineering and Architecture and Planning, Dawood University of Engineering and Technology), Prof. Nadia Ayub (Dean, College of Economics and Social Development, Institute of Business Management and Regional Member Asia-Pacific, OWSD Executive Board), Prof. Mehreen Lateef (Principal, Bahria College of Allied Health Sciences, Bahria University), Dr. Huma Ikram (Associate Professor, Department of Biochemistry, University of Karachi), Dr. Roohi Kanwal (Assistant Professor, Department of Zoology, University of Karachi), and Ms. Dania Farah (Executive Assistant to the Director, Boston Neurobehavioral Associates).

During the discussion, the panelists shared valuable insights on strengthening women’s participation in academia and professional fields, promoting interdisciplinary collaboration, and fostering leadership opportunities for women across various sectors. They also emphasised the importance of institutional policies, mentorship, and exposure to emerging career opportunities to support the next generation of women professionals and researchers.

The seminar provided an interactive platform for students and early-career researchers to engage with experienced academic leaders and gain guidance regarding career pathways, academic growth, and professional development. The session concluded with a collective message highlighting the importance of sustained efforts, inclusive academic environments, and collaborative initiatives to advance women’s participation in science and education.

The event reaffirmed OWSD Pakistan National Chapter’s continued commitment to supporting and promoting women and girls in science through advocacy, mentorship, and educational outreach initiatives.
