Tackling gender based violence: Towards an enabling science and research environment

21 October 2020

14:30-16:00

Since 2016, there has been increasing awareness of the continuum of gender-based violence (GBV) at institutions of higher learning in South Africa. Sexual harassment, sexual violence, transgender and gender non-binary bullying, and rape are just some of the forms that GBV takes not only in the research environment but also in society in general. For example, research on the participation of women and girls in research consistently indicates that sexual harassment, discriminatory workplace practices, bullying are key factors contributing to attrition and low numbers. We need more research, we need more activism, we need more policies and practices, we need more leadership, we need more empathy and mental health support, we need more accountability, we need more swift actions against perpetrators.

This webinar brings together a panel representing research leaders, policymakers, and students to contribute to ongoing discussions on building an enabling environment in research and science where women, girls and gender non-binary people can thrive. It will focus on experiences of postgraduate students with regard to GBV at higher education institutions; research and research gaps regarding gender based violence in the higher education and research environment; and policy measures in place to tackle gender based violence at institutions.
