OWSD Bangladesh National Chapter organises Begum Rokeya Day Seminar

Begum Rokeya Day was observed at the Bangladesh University of Health Sciences (BUHS) to mark the 139^th birth and 87^th death anniversary of the legendary writer and activist of women empowerment Begum Rokeya Shakhawat Hossain. The seminar was organized jointly by the Organization for Women in Science for the Developing world (OWSD) Bangladesh National Chapter and Bangladesh University of Health Sciences (BUHS). Dr Sharmin Parveen, Dean, Faculty of Allied Health Sciences, BUHS & President, OWSD-BD presided over the meeting. Dr Salina Parvin Banu, Chief Scientific Officer, Plant Pathology Division, Bangladesh Agricultural Research Institute (BARI) (Rtd.) and Advisory member of OWSD-BD was the key note speaker of the session. Prof Dr Faridul Alam, Vice-Chancellor of BUHS and Prof Begum Rokeya, Dean, Faculty of Basic Sciences, BUHS were present as Chief Guest and Special Guest of the seminar respectively.

Begum Rokeya Day is a commemoration of the birth and death anniversary of Rokeya, observed annually on 9 December in Bangladesh at a national level. A Bangladeshi National Honour is conferred on individual women every year for their exceptional achievements.
