OWSD Pakistan: She Leads in STEAM: Women in Science

The Organization for Women in Science for the Developing World (OWSD) – Pakistan Nation Chapter, in collaboration with Khyber Medical University (KMU) and Dosti Welfare Organization, successfully hosted the “She Leads in STEAM: Women in Science” event on October 31, 2024, at KMU’s multi-purpose hall in Peshawar.
This impactful event brought together pioneering women in Science, Technology, Engineering, Arts, and Mathematics (STEAM), aiming to celebrate their achievements, inspire future leaders, and foster discussion around challenges and opportunities in these fields.
The event opened with remarks from Prof. Dr. Inayat Shah, Director of IBMS at KMU, setting an inspiring tone for the day's activities. Keynote speaker Mr. Meezan Rahman, CEO of STEMP21, delivered insights on the significance of STEAM fields, followed by a panel discussion, “Turning Challenges into Opportunities,” led by Prof. Dr. Zilli Huma, Director of Academics at KMU.
Esteemed panelists included Dr. Saima Hashim, Environmental Specialist; Prof. Dr. Sofia Kabir, Director ORIC at Gandhara University; Dr. Nargis Jamila, Director ORIC at SBBWUP; Prof. Shagufta Javaid, retired educationist; Dr. Raisa Bano, Registrar at Women University Swabi; Engr. Misbah Waheed, Additional Assistant Commissioner; and Engr. Abdul Mohiz, CEO of TechRica Peshawar. Each panelist shared their experiences and strategies for navigating and thriving in traditionally challenging fields for women.
Throughout the event, participants engaged in interactive sessions, art displays, and networking, fostering a collaborative atmosphere that encouraged future engagement and mentorship. Special remarks from Mr. Irfan Khan, Program Manager at Dosti Welfare Organization, as well as notable contributions from Prof. Dr. Rubina Nazli, Acting Vice Chancellor of KMU, and Prof. Dr. Saima Saleem, secretary of OWSD PN
C, highlighted the importance of gender inclusivity in STEAM.
The event concluded with a vote of thanks from Dr. Hafsah Muhammad, Chief Organizer and OWSD PNC focal person for Peshawar, and Muhtaram Shah, Lead Organizer, followed by the presentation of awards and a commemorative group photo session. Attendees left with renewed commitment to their fields and a shared vision for supporting the next generation of women in STEAM.
