As we mark Women’s Month in South Africa this August , Dr Stanley Maphosa interviewed Miss Dorothy Ngila and Dr Caroline Pule, the Chair and Vice Chair, respectively, of OWSD South Africa.
Women scientists at the forefront of OWSD - SA Chapter
Women scientists across the globe have been at the forefront of the fight against COVID-19, playing pivotal roles, from advancing knowledge on the virus, to developing vaccines, treating patients, and assessing the pandemic’s devastating economic and social impact. However, the health crisis has laid bare disparities in the scientific system. Girls are significantly underrepresented in Science Technology Engineering and Mathematics (STEM) subjects at school, and women occupy fewer senior positions than men at universities. The pandemic has widened the existing gender gaps, and increased care responsibilities for women.
As we mark Women’s Month in South Africa this August, Dr Stanley Maphosa, the National and International Liaison Manager at the Academy of Science of South Africa ASSAf and the Coordinator of The World Academy of Science Sub-Saharan Africa Regional Partner (TWAS SAREP) interviewed Miss Dorothy Ngila and Dr Caroline Pule the Chair and Vice Chair, respectively, of the Organisation for Women in Science for the Developing World (OWSD) South Africa Chapter.
