Science Snack Breaks: Four short films about OWSD scientists
February 09, 2024
Between February 11, International Day of Women and Girls in Science, and March 8, International Women's Day, OWSD is celebrating women in science with a series of four short online film screenings. The 'Science Snack Break' series is designed to provide a dose of entertainment and inspiration in a quick format that almost anyone can squeeze into their day. Each of the four films, which were produced under the OWSD Visions project, is between 5-6 minutes long and will be followed by a brief Q&A with the film's director and protagonist and with filmmaker Nicole Leghissa, who conceived and oversees OWSD Visions (you can find all of the previous OWSD Visions films here).
The series will kick off on Wednesday, 14 February with a screening of the film featuring textile scientist - and OWSD Early Career fellow - Pendo Bigambo, who is recycling cotton and other textile waste from the used clothing market in Tanzania and turning it into useful nanomaterials. The screening will start at 15:00 CET (UTC + 1). Registration for the event is available at: bit.ly/SnackBreak1
The three other films in the series will feature:
- Daphne Bitalo, a geneticist pioneering a new approach to cocoa fermentation for Ugandan farmers
- Tista Prasai Joshi, a microbiologist using coconut husks and other waste products to produce clean drinking water for Nepal
- Priscilla Mante, a neuropharmacologist incorporating traditional medicine into neuroscience research in Ghana
