OWSD at the Continental Conference on Transforming STEM in Africa (November 26-28, 2024)

November 29, 2024

From November 26-28, 2024, the Organization for Women in Science for the Developing World (OWSD) participated in the Continental Conference on Transforming Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) in Africa. The event, organized by UNESCO and the African Union, took place in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, and brought together key stakeholders from across Africa and beyond to discuss strategies for advancing STEM in the region.

OWSD brought to the table its over 30 years of expertise in supporting women scientists in developing countries, taking part in a pivotal discussion focused on advancing gender equality and inclusion in STEM. The conversation centered on addressing the root causes of gender gaps, stereotypes, and biases in order to create a more inclusive and equitable STEM ecosystem. A key highlight of the discussion was the importance of establishing networks of prominent women in STEM to mentor and inspire the next generation of female scientists.

The conference proved to be an invaluable platform for exchanging insights and ideas, with contributions that will inform the formulation of high-level recommendations to support gender equality in STEM. In addition, the event facilitated the strengthening of partnerships with like-minded institutions and organizations. OWSD also used this opportunity to lay the groundwork for future cooperation with other key Italian actors and to further solidify its relationship with the Italian government, which has shown a strong interest in supporting OWSD’s initiatives in Africa.

During her time at the conference, Giulia Signori, OWSD Communications and Admin Assistant met with Italy’s Permanent Representative to the African Union, Ambassador Maurizio Busanelli, and the Italian Scientific Attaché, Prof. Laura Pacifici Noja. These discussions focused on additional opportunities to promote the role of women scientists across the African continent and explore collaborative efforts to support female researchers and innovators.
