2019 International Day of Women and Girls in Science

Monday, February 11, will mark the 4th International Day of Women and Girls in Science. This day was recognized by the United Nations in light of the global need "to achieve full and equal access to and participation in science for women and girls, and further achieve gender equality and the empowerment of women and girls."

The OWSD community is invited to take part in a social media campaign in recognition of the day, with the theme of #IAdmire. We want to hear about a woman scientist that you admire -- whether it's someone you know personally, like a mentor, colleague, or student, or someone who's made great achievements in your field, or a trailblazing scientist like Ada Lovelace or Marie Curie.

To participate, simply post on any social media platform (Facebook, Twitter, Instagram) between now and February 11 using the hashtag #IAdmire, and explain what inspires you about the woman you chose. Please feel free to include photos too, so we can put a face to all of these remarkable women.

Please share this campaign -- you can forward the flyer available for download below by email or post it at your institute.

In addition, OWSD members have been invited by /Rights!/, an open online platform focused on human rights, to contribute testimonies that would highlight challenges and limitations faced by women in science - especially in terms of their human rights, dignity, and freedoms. Ideally these testimonies would also send a positive message about the means, opportunities and benefits of overcoming such challenges. Attached here you will find a simple questionnaire which can be completed and submitted to contact@rightsblog.net. These testimonies will be published on Rights' online platform on February 11.
