Turning a crisis into opportunities: How the COVID 19 pandemic enabled the consolidation of the OWSD Guatemala National Chapter

The launching of the OWSD Guatemala National Chapter has allowed a group of women researchers, scientists and scholars from this country to turn the daring times of the COVID19 pandemic into a process of hope and opportunity. Guatemala is a 17-million-population, Central American country located in the middle of the continent. The isthmus formed by Guatemala along with other five nations form a geographic joint between the more scientifically advanced North America and the scientifically emerging South America. Yet, nearly all Central America territory and its societies are considered scientifically lagging. Several indicators offer evidence of the significant challenges Guatemala faces in order to build a stronger science and technology environment, including the percentage of GDP invested in education, science and technology, the number of full time research personnel, the number of scientific publications, trends in the applications to register patents, to mention just a few. Moreover, access to indicators require additional efforts as the production of good-quality information has not been part of systematic and permanent practices in the country. Furthermore, in the case of the participation of women in science and registries of their contribution to knowledge production and dissemination has been practically absent of relevant reports, media coverage and the national public agenda. That is why the consolidation of the National Chapter of the OWSD for Guatemala represents a unique opportunity to address these shortcomings.
According to the OWSD digital platform, there are registries of Guatemala female scientists holding membership since the 1980s and 1990s. It took over nearly three decades to accumulate the minimum of 20 Full Members required to apply to become a recognized national chapter. Since late 2019 a group of enthusiastic Guatemalan women started the preparations to apply for such recognition, however it was until early 2020 that the process showed viability. Five women took the initiative with two more joining the efforts in February. Then, the seven scientists engaged in an intense campaign to increase the number of members. Some of them residing in the Guatemalan territory while some were living and working overseas, made use of different communication mechanisms holding online meetings, designing strategies and taking actions in preparation to apply for the consolidation of the OWSD Guatemala National Chapter. With a membership of 53 at the time of the establishment in mid-March 2020, the OWSD Guatemala NC was launched offering Guatemalan women with the opportunity to belong and interact within a dynamic scientific community and increase their incidence. As part of the OWSD female scientists, researchers and scholars continue the advancement in their careers and contributing to the visibility of their participation. As individuals and as a community, these women continue their involvement in the development of Guatemala.
The following weeks after the launching of the OWSD Guatemala NC allowed the community to grow organically in number of members and in the reach of their activities. With a steady increment, this National Chapter is among the most numerous in Latin American with over 150 members (as of May 20th). This has turned the Chapter into one of the most solid data bases of Guatemala female researchers and scientists. The experience could be a welcome inspiration to the rest of Central American countries, most of which share similar characteristics. Indeed, the extraordinary times experienced by the entire humanity amid the COVID-19 pandemic call for a more decisive participation of women in science more than ever.
El lanzamiento del Capítulo Nacional OWSD Guatemala ha permitido que un grupo de mujeres investigadoras, científicas y académicas de este país transforme los dramáticos tiempos de la pandemia de COVID19 en un proceso de esperanza y oportunidad.
Guatemala es un país centroamericano de 17 millones de habitantes ubicado en el medio del continente. El istmo formado por Guatemala junto con otras cinco naciones representa una unión geográfica entre América del Norte más científicamente avanzada y América del Sur científicamente emergente. Sin embargo, casi todo el territorio de América Central y sus sociedades se consideran científicamente rezagados. Varios indicadores ofrecen evidencia de los desafíos importantes que enfrenta Guatemala para construir un entorno de ciencia y tecnología más fuerte, incluido el porcentaje del PIB invertido en educación, ciencia y tecnología, la cantidad de personal de investigación a tiempo completo, la cantidad de publicaciones científicas, las tendencias en las solicitudes para registrar patentes, por mencionar solo algunas. Además, el acceso a los indicadores requiere esfuerzos adicionales ya que la producción de información de buena calidad no ha sido parte de prácticas sistemáticas y permanentes en el país. Además, en el caso de la participación de las mujeres en la ciencia y en los registros de su contribución a la producción y difusión del conocimiento, prácticamente no se han recibido informes relevantes, la cobertura de los medios y la agenda pública nacional. Es por eso que la consolidación del Capítulo Nacional de la OWSD para Guatemala representa una oportunidad única para abordar estas deficiencias.
Según la plataforma digital OWSD, existen registros de mujeres científicas de Guatemala que son miembros desde los años ochenta y noventa. Se necesitaron más de tres décadas para acumular el mínimo de 20 Miembros de pleno derecho necesarios para postularse para convertirse en un capítulo nacional reconocido. Desde finales de 2019, un grupo de entusiastas mujeres guatemaltecas comenzó los preparativos para solicitar dicho reconocimiento, sin embargo, fue hasta principios de 2020 que el proceso mostró viabilidad. Cinco mujeres tomaron la iniciativa y otras dos se unieron a los esfuerzos en el mes de febrero. Luego, las siete científicas participaron en una intensa campaña para aumentar el número de integrantes. Algunas de ellas residían en el territorio guatemalteco mientras otras vivían y trabajaban en el extranjero, utilizaron diferentes mecanismos de comunicación para celebrar reuniones en línea, diseñar estrategias y tomar medidas en preparación para solicitar la consolidación del Capítulo Nacional de la OWSD Guatemala. Con una membresía de 53 en el momento del establecimiento a mediados de marzo de 2020, se lanzó el OWSD Guatemala Capítulo Nacional, que ofrece a las mujeres guatemaltecas la oportunidad de pertenecer e interactuar dentro de una comunidad científica dinámica y aumentar su incidencia. Como parte de los incentivos, las científicas, investigadoras y académicas de OWSD, continúan el avance en sus carreras y contribuyen a la visibilidad de su participación. Como individuos y como comunidad, estas mujeres continúan su participación en el desarrollo de Guatemala.
Las siguientes semanas después del lanzamiento de OWSD Guatemala NC permitieron a la comunidad crecer orgánicamente en número de miembros y al alcance de sus actividades. Con un incremento constante, este Capítulo Nacional es uno de los más numerosos en América Latina con más de 150 miembros (hasta el 20 de mayo). Esto ha convertido el Capítulo en una de las bases de datos más sólidas de las investigadoras y científicas guatemaltecas. La experiencia podría ser una inspiración bienvenida para el resto de países centroamericanos, la mayoría de los cuales comparten características similares. De hecho, los tiempos extraordinarios experimentados por toda la humanidad en medio de la pandemia de COVID-19 exigen más que nunca una participación más decisiva de las mujeres en la ciencia.
