On the 17th of February 2021, OWSD Zimbabwe National Chapter shared its platform with the Society of Women in Safety, Health, and Environment Africa (SOWSHE-A)
On the 17th of February 2021, OWSD Zimbabwe National Chapter shared its platform with the Society of Women in Safety, Health and Environment Africa (SOWSHE-A). The organization which was represented by the Vice President for Southern Africa Ms. Grace Zvinowanda who is also an OWSD Zimbabwe National Chapter member shared its goals, activities, and membership. Society for Women in Safety, Health and Environment- Africa (SOWSHE-A) is a non-profit making, non-governmental and non-political organization that serves as a member body for females in the OSHE profession across Africa and beyond.
The Vice President, Ms. Grace Zvinowanda highlighted the aims and objectives of the organization. These include: to advocate on occupational safety, health and environment issues specific to women in the workplace, whilst stimulating and advancing female frontiers in Safety and Health, to provide a vast local, national and global supportive community for networking and allow change-making and collaborative opportunities. The organization also aims at organizing and sponsoring annual conferences and fund research in Safety, Health, and Environment from time to time and as the need arises. The organization focuses on Africa and beyond, focusing on women in construction, mining, agriculture, engineering, architecture, oil and gas, marine, and education sectors just to mention a few. Their core values are to empower, quality, unique, astute, and leadership.
The SOWSHE-A organization holds different membership and this includes student membership, affiliate, associate, and fellow membership categories. The membership categories hold different benefits. For student membership, students get the opportunity to access branch networks across Africa, have training discounts through trusted partnerships, and access numerous and free and discounted events. An affiliate member is someone who is starting a career in safety, health, and environment or an associated discipline. An associate member is someone who has already made a decision to develop themselves as a practitioner in health and safety and may also need to access the resources of a professional body to support, provide, and guidance on health and safety. The last category is the fellowship membership which is for someone who is driven to promote professions and best practices in safety, health, and the environment.
The SOWSHE also has a mentorship scheme with career development and leadership mentoring schemes which provides an opportunity for mentees who are serious about increasing their strategic health, safety, and environmental knowledge, career development, and leadership skills. The organization has also achieved in setting up the organization across Africa, unveiling jurisdictional networks, monthly webinars for knowledge sharing, and end of month health, safety, and environment training courses.
As she concluded her presentation, she encouraged all OWSD Zimbabwe National Chapter members to also join the SOWSHE-A.
