About me

Amy Thein graduated from the Institute of Plant Protection, Chinese Academy of Agricultural Science at Beijing, China, with OWSD's fellowship award. Since 2016, I have been managing several community development programs relating to livelihood activities and climate-smart agriculture under several donor-funded projects.

Specialist Expertise:
Management of large multi-country projects in Myanmar that focus on livelihood improvement in Climate-Smart Agriculture, which are environmentally sustainable. Recently, as the National Technical Advisor at OWSD Myanmar National Chapter, I have overseen the implementation of Innovative Climate-Smart Agriculture Practices in the Central Dry Zone, funded by UNDP. As a Deputy Chief of Party (DCoP) in “Cultivating Rural Opportunities for Productivity Strengthening (CROPS), at Catholic Relief Services (CRS) funded by USAID, focusing to contributing to sustainable agriculture production through increased access to improved agricultural inputs, improved skills in yield-enhancing crop management practices, and strengthened linkages with domestic markets. I contributed to proposal development for different donor-funded projects as National Technical Advisor at CRS. As an Assistant Project Manager in UNDP Adaptation Fund Project, and as Senior Associate Scientist/Project Coordinator at International Rice Research Institute in a World Bank Finance Project (2016-2021), managed Farmer-Field Schools, demonstration plots with advanced technologies, digital soil mapping, landscape, integrated pest management, soil management, and postharvest management in Sagaing, Mandalay, Naypyitaw, and Bago regions. As a National Climate Smart Agriculture Expert at GFA Consulting Groups GmbH, “Climate Investment Readiness Project” for Proximity Finance, I contributed to the development of the Climate-Smart Agriculture Strategy for Proximity Finance and the Monitoring and Evaluation Framework for the implementation of the Climate Investment Readiness Project.

Degrees:

2016
Doctorate     Agricultural Sciences
“Characterization of the overlapping genes OsSPL11 and OsRP-1 in response to nitrogen deficiency and/or bacterial infection by Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae in rice” • Confirm nitrogen limitation induced SPL11 by qRT-PCR analysis from rice spl11 mutant and SPL11OX plants under different nitrogen concentration • Confirm the role of SPL11 in plant growth and development under different nitrogen condition • Analyze the expression of senescence-associated gene in response to different nitrogen condition by qRT-PCR • Analyze the expression of defense-related gene in response to different nitrogen condition by qRT-PCR • Construct the expression of OsRP-1 and transform to rice • Functional analysis of OsRP-1 using transgenic plant of over expression of OsRP-1 • Screening the downstream interactive proteins of OsRP-1 by Yeast-two hybrid system and confirmed by GST pull-down analysis • Sequence analysis of positive interactive proteins by Gene Ontology Analysis • Downstream analysis of OsAHPs by RNAs interference technology
2010
Master     Agricultural Sciences
To study on the biological control efficacy of Non-pathogenic strain of Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae against bacterial blight of rice.
1999
Undergraduate     Agricultural Sciences
To study on Agricultural Science including Plant pathology, Plant entomology, Soil and water management, Botany, Horticulture and Extension • Screening of non-pathogenic mutants from Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae • Dissertation: Reduction of bacterial leaf blight of rice caused by Xanthomonas oryzae pv. oryzae by its avirulent strains
