Bachelor's of Science Ana Isabel Soto Carias

All my life, I have been extremely interested in animals and the environment. I remember watching as many documentaries as I could on TV while I was a child. Having had the luxury of having a backyard full of different trees and plants, I was able to investigate to my heart's content. I have had a long-time desire to contribute to biodiversity conservation through research on invertebrates and conservation of the environment. I was able to begin my studies at the prestigious National Taiwan University (NTU), being able to pursue a degree in Life Sciences. My journey to NTU began with earning a full scholarship based on my outstanding academic performance in high school.  My undergraduate education at NTU was one of the most challenging and rewarding experiences of my life. I was able to complete my degree in Life Sciences at one of Asia's leading universities. During my time at NTU, I was tested time and time again, as most of my coursework was in Chinese, which is not my native language. While this undoubtedly affected my academic performance, it also required determination, adaptability, and perseverance far beyond what I had previously experienced. NTU gave me the tools to expand my knowledge and show how resilient I am to achieve my dreams when the situation does not seem to be on my side. Although my GPA may not fully reflect my academic potential, I hope it will be considered within the context of the extraordinary challenges I embraced. I chose not to take the easier path. Instead, I immersed myself in a rigorous scientific curriculum in a foreign language because I believed the experience would prepare me to become a stronger scientist and a more resilient person. 

My passion for conservation has grown only stronger as I have advanced in my degree. I have begun cultivating a passion mostly for invertebrates, as people underestimate how important they are to our overall environment.  I hope to contribute to research that advances our understanding of biodiversity and supports evidence-based conservation efforts. I believe graduate school represents an opportunity to demonstrate what I am truly capable of achieving in an environment where my scientific curiosity, determination, and international experience can flourish. I am fully committed to dedicating myself to advanced research and making meaningful contributions to your academic community.
