About me
Carolina born and raised in Ecuador, is a biotechnologist with a PhD in Biomedicine from Universidad de los Andes, Chile. She is studying nutrient absorption in the small intestine in the context of obesity. Specifically, Carolina focuses on the molecular mechanisms underlying the fructolysis pathway to engineer novel weight-loss therapies.
Carolina earned her bachelor's degree from Universidad de las Americas. Here, she explored the folate pathway and its clinical association with prostate and breast cancer in the Ecuadorian population. During her Master's degree in Barcelona-Spain, she studied the antiangiogenic effects of drug resistance in renal carcinoma using in vivo models. For her PhD, she moved to Santiago, Chile where she studied the relationship of prostate cancer development and fructose, one of the highly consumed sugar in the las 3 decades. Her passion for metabolism and fructose lead to her to study more in deep on different metabolic syndromes such as obesity and diabetes.
