About me
Im a Panamanian doctor, specialist in Pediatric Infectious Diseases and a clinical researcher. I currently serves as a researcher at the clinical and epidemiological research center CEVAXIN and as an attending physician in the Pediatric Infectious Diseases department at Hospital del Niño doctor José Renán Esquivel in Panama.
Academic Background
I earned my medical degree from the University of Panama (1999) , then I continue my residencies in Pediatrics and Pediatric Infectious Diseases at Hospital del Niño doctor José Renán Esquivel (HNDJRE)
I did a fellow in research at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center and Children’s Hospital in Dallas (2007) and holds a Master’s degree in HIV infection from Madrid (2012)
Professional Achievements and Leadership
Leadership: I was a past President of the Infectious Disease Society of Panama (2014–2015) and Im currently part of the board of the Panamanian Pediatric Infectious Disease Society
Committee Memberships: I was member of the National Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (CONAPI) and the Paediatric European Network for Treatment of AIDS (PENTA)
Academia: Im a Pediatric Professor at Universidad de Panamá.
Research and Publications
I have publication related to HIV/AIDS, vaccines, Kawasaki disease, and respiratory viruses which have been published in prestigious international journals, including the New England Journal of Medicine and The Journal of Infectious Diseases
I have also participated as a Principal Investigator for various clinical trials regarding respiratory illnesses and hepatitis
I am specialist in Pediatric Infectious Diseases and a clinical researcher dedicated to advancing pediatric medicine and public health in Panama.
Currently, I serve as a researcher at the clinical and epidemiological research center CEVAXIN and as an attending physician in the Pediatric Infectious Diseases department at Hospital del Niño in Panama, where I have been a member of the infectious diseases research group since 2007.
Academic Foundation and Specialization
My medical career began at the University of Panama, where I earned my Medical Doctor degree in 1999.
I completed my residency in Pediatrics (2001–2004) and a fellowship in Pediatric Infectious Diseases (2004–2006) at Hospital del Niño.
To further my expertise, I served as a Research Fellow at the University of Texas Southwestern Medical Center and Children’s Hospital in Dallas (2007) and later obtained a Master’s degree in HIV infection from Madrid in 2012.
Professional Leadership and Advocacy
I am deeply involved in the leadership of professional medical societies and national health committees.
My past leadership roles include serving as President of the Infectious Disease Society of Panama (2014–2015) and President of its V Congress. Currently, I am:
• A member of the board of the Panamanian Pediatric Infectious Disease Society.
• A member of the National Advisory Committee on Immunization Practices (CONAPI).
• A member of the National Committee for the Verification of Elimination of Measles, Rubella, and Congenital Rubella.
• An active member of the Paediatric European Network for Treatment of AIDS (PENTA) and the Latin American Society of Pediatric Infectious Diseases (SLIPE).
Research and Academic Contributions
As a researcher, I have focused extensively on HIV/AIDS, vaccines (specifically Hepatitis A and Rotavirus), respiratory viruses, and Kawasaki disease.
I have acted as a Principal Investigator and Sub-investigator for numerous international clinical trials involving treatments for influenza, respiratory syncytial virus (RSV), and hepatitis.
My work has been published in high-impact journals, including the New England Journal of Medicine, The Journal of Infectious Diseases, and the Pediatric Infectious Disease Journal. Additionally, I contribute to the academic community as a Pediatric Professor at both the University of Panama and the University of Columbus, and I serve on the editorial board of the Pediátrica de Panamá journal.
Achievements and Distinctions
Throughout my training and career, I have been recognized for academic and scientific excellence:
• I was awarded the distinction of Resident with the best academic index at Hospital del Niño in 2003.
• I have received multiple Nestlé research awards (2001 and 2004) for my collaborative research on respiratory syncytial virus and febrile neutropenia in children with cancer.
• I am a member of the National Investigation System (SNI) under SENACYT in Panama.
