About me

Dr Hafsa Essop is a Senior Lecturer in Radiography at the University of Pretoria and holds a PhD in Diagnostic Radiography, awarded with Merit. She is the founder of PregiDose, an innovative mobile application to improve fetal dose monitoring and support pregnant radiation workers, which earned her international recognition, including the Best Young Scientist and Professional Award in Tokyo, Japan. Dr Essop represents South Africa on the International Commission on Radiological Protection (ICRP) as a mentee on Task Group 123. Her postdoctoral research focuses on evidence-based radiation protection policy for pregnant workers. She is widely published, actively engaged in public science communication, and a strong advocate for women in STEM at national and international platforms.

Dr Hafsa Essop is a Senior Lecturer in the Department of Radiography at the
University of Pretoria. She holds a PhD in Diagnostic Radiography, awarded with a
Merit Certificate from the SRC.
She is the founder of PregiDose, a prototype mobile application designed to improve
fetal dose monitoring practices and the well-being of pregnant radiation workers.
This pioneering innovation earned her international recognition, including the Best
Young Scientist and Professional Award at a global conference in Tokyo, Japan. Dr
Essop represents South Africa on the International Commission on Radiological
Protection (ICRP) and serves as a mentee on Task Group 123, to guide the revision
of classifications for harmful radiation-induced outcomes. Under the mentorship of
leading international experts in radiation protection, her postdoctoral research aims
to contribute to evidence-based policy revision at both national and global levels.
She is member of the Gates Foundation, Early Health Researcher Support Network,
and an invited moderator at the 7 th Women in Science Symposium, supported by the
Department of Science and Technology, facilitating a session on Closing the gender
gap in STEM, her voice in Science. She was also the co-chair of the next generation
of Scientists at the ICRP conference in Abu Dhabi, as well as the keynote speaker at Sefako Makgotho University, School of Medicine oath-taking.
Dr Essop has published several peer-reviewed articles and is deeply committed to
public engagement, presenting at multiple national and international conferences,
