Dr Fatou Kine Gueye
About me
Dr Fatou Kiné Gueye is a Biodiversity-Environment Specialist with a PhD from Cheikh Anta Diop University of Dakar. She has over five years of experience designing and coordinating sustainable development projects across West Africa, focused on climate change adaptation, agroecology, food security, and natural resource management, with donors including FAO, IUCN, WRI, and the EU. She currently serves as Project Officer at Enda ECOPOP and previously conducted postdoctoral research at UCAD on neglected plant species for food security and women's empowerment. She is the author of more than 13 international scientific publications and mentors young women researchers through networks such as SenAWARD and OWSD
Dr Fatou Kiné Gueye is a Senegalese Biodiversity-Environment Specialist with a strong background in sustainable development, climate change adaptation, and food security across West Africa. She holds a PhD in Biodiversity and Environment (Knowledge and Conservation of Biodiversity) from Cheikh Anta Diop University of Dakar (2017-2021), a Master's degree in Evolution, Natural Heritage and Societies, with a specialization in Biodiversity, Environment and Tropical Plants, from the National Museum of Natural History of Paris and Pierre and Marie Curie University (2014-2016), and a Bachelor's degree in Biology, Chemistry, and Geoscience from Cheikh Anta Diop University (2009-2013).
Over more than five years, Dr Gueye has built extensive experience in the design, coordination, and monitoring and evaluation of sustainable development projects and policies, working closely with multilateral donors such as the Food and Agriculture Organization (FAO), the International Union for Conservation of Nature (IUCN), the World Resources Institute (WRI), and the European Union. Her core areas of expertise include climate change adaptation, environmental governance, agroecology, sustainable natural resource management, and multi-donor portfolio and budget management.
Since October 2021, she has served as Project Officer at Enda ECOPOP, where she leads projects on food governance, agroecology, and climate change. Her portfolio includes the FAO-funded project on greening urban agrifood systems in Kaffrine (USD 133,000), the ACCESS project on civil society climate action in Senegal funded by WRI (USD 160,000), the PROMOVAL project on the valorization of fisheries products in Joal-Fadiouth funded by the EU/IUCN (EUR 197,355), and the FAO-funded project on resilient food governance in Bambilor and Koungheul (USD 267,410). Her work has involved climate and biodiversity awareness workshops, community capacity-building, and a baseline study on the empowerment of women and girls in Tambacounda, Kédougou, Sédhiou, and Dakar.
From April to August 2025, she also worked as a Climate Change Expert for BENNEN TECHNOLOGIES-SUARL (Canada) on an emergency management platform for the Comoros, where she analyzed climate emergency data needs, defined functional specifications for a centralized database, facilitated stakeholder workshops, and conducted functional testing of the platform.
Dr Gueye's academic career includes postdoctoral research at the Department of Plant Biology of Cheikh Anta Diop University. From late 2022 to April 2025, she served as scientific coordinator of the VALONUS project, which promoted water lilies (Nymphaea) as a resource for food security and women's economic empowerment, including supervising a student's research on domesticating water lilies in ponds and coaching women's groups in product valorization. From December 2021 to March 2024, she coordinated research activities under the FORENS project on neglected and underutilized plant species in West and Southern Africa, supervising Master's students within an international, multidisciplinary team. Since May 2020, she has also taught as a part-time lecturer in Systematic Botany, Ethnobotany, Ecosystem Services, and Plant Valorization at Cheikh Anta Diop University and the Dakar Polytechnic School.
Earlier in her career, from February to March 2017, she worked as an Associate Consultant in Ethnobotany for the African Development Engineering Society (AIDF), conducting socioeconomic and biophysical surveys on ecosystem services across seven forests and two nature reserves in northern Senegal to support sustainable management decisions.
Dr Gueye is the author of more than 13 international scientific publications in peer-reviewed journals covering topics such as neglected and underutilized plant species, food security, ornamental flora, biofertilizers, and macroalgae, and she has presented her research at numerous international scientific conferences and colloquia across Senegal, Côte d'Ivoire, and Nigeria. She has also authored several technical reports and her doctoral and master's theses on the valorization of Nymphaea and Typha species for food security and local livelihoods.
Beyond her professional and academic work, Dr Gueye is deeply engaged in mentorship and community service. She serves as Treasurer of the national chapter of SenAWARD and of the Organization for Women in Science for the Developing World (OWSD), and as Deputy Secretary General of the FSDS Association. She has contributed to the establishment of the University of Eastern Senegal in Tambacounda, coordinated community science outreach initiatives such as UCAD Rurale to keep girls in scientific fields, and participated in numerous climate and biodiversity awareness events, including the Fresque du Climat and Fresque de la Désertification initiatives.
Fluent in French and proficient in English, Dr Gueye combines scientific rigor, field experience, and a strong commitment to women's empowerment and community-driven sustainable development. She is based in Dakar, Senegal.
