Dr Fenji Materechera-Mitochi
About me
Dr. Fenji Materechera-Mitochi is a sustainability scientist and Researcher at the Institute for Water Research, Rhodes University. Her research integrates sustainability science, systems thinking, and transdisciplinary approaches to address challenges at the water–land–agriculture nexus, with a focus on equitable agricultural transformation and water governance in South Africa. She currently leads a Water Research Commission-funded project on agricultural commercialisation in the Eastern Cape and has secured and managed major national and international research grants. Dr. Materechera-Mitochi is also an experienced postgraduate supervisor, science communicator, and advocate for collaborative, impact-driven research that informs policy and practice.
Dr Fenji Materechera-Mitochi is a South African based sustainability scientist, environmental researcher and academic whose work focuses on addressing complex sustainability challenges at the intersection of water, land, agriculture and governance. With an academic background in Geography and Environmental Sciences, she employs systems thinking, sustainability science and transdisciplinary research approaches to investigate ecological and socio-economic challenges emerging from agricultural landscapes, with particular emphasis on the South African and broader African context.
She currently serves as a researcher and Postgraduate Supervisor at the Institute for Water Research (IWR) at Rhodes University, South Africa. Her research focuses on the water–land–agriculture nexus, water governance, agricultural transformation and the development of innovative approaches for addressing complex sustainability challenges. She brings a people-centred and co-creation-driven approach to her work, combining qualitative research, systems analysis and stakeholder engagement to generate knowledge that is both scientifically robust and relevant to policy and practice.
Dr Materechera-Mitochi holds a PhD in Environmental Sciences from the University of the Witwatersrand. Her doctoral research, titled Farming Systems in South Africa Beyond 2020: A Scenario-Based Study, Using Systems Analysis, of the Connectivity Between Farming Systems in the Vhembe District, Limpopo, South Africa, explored the relationships and connectivity between different farming systems using systems analysis and scenario-based approaches. This work has contributed to ongoing discussions on agricultural transformation and the potential for more integrated relationships between small- and large-scale farming systems in South Africa.
Her academic journey also includes a Master of Science degree in Geography from Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, where her research examined the challenges and opportunities associated with implementing integrated catchment management in the Gamtoos River Catchment. She completed her Honours degree in Geography through Rhodes University and the University of West in Sweden, where she conducted comparative research on sustainable development from local government and household perspectives. She also holds a Bachelor of Science degree in Geography and Environmental Science from Rhodes University.
Dr Materechera-Mitochi has developed a multidisciplinary research profile that bridges environmental science, sustainability science, agriculture and water governance. Her research interests include systems thinking, farming systems analysis, scenario development, causal loop diagramming, transdisciplinary methodologies, water governance and the water–land–agriculture nexus. Through this work, she seeks to contribute to the development of innovative and contextually relevant solutions to challenges affecting agricultural communities and natural resource systems in South Africa and across the African continent.
A significant aspect of her current work involves leading and contributing to externally funded research addressing questions of equity, agricultural development and natural resource governance. She is the Principal Investigator and Principal Grant Holder of a Water Research Commission-funded project examining the commercialisation potential of land and water resources through an integrated water–land–agriculture nexus approach in the Eastern Cape Province of South Africa. The project seeks to contribute to a better understanding of how land, water and agricultural resources can be more effectively integrated to support agricultural development and opportunities for resource-poor and emerging farmers.
She was also a Co-Investigator on a successfully completed Water Research Commission-funded project investigating governance and institutional arrangements for accelerating equity within the water–land–agriculture nexus, with a particular focus on resource-poor and emerging farmers in smallholder irrigation schemes in South Africa. These projects reflect her commitment to research that addresses questions of equity, inclusion, governance and transformation within agricultural and water resource systems.
In addition to her research activities, Dr Materechera-Mitochi has gained significant experience in international academic collaboration and project management. She has served as a part-time Project Administrator and member of the Project Management Committee for the African Water Resources Mobility Network (AWaRMN), a multi-country initiative funded through the European Commission's Intra-Africa Academic Mobility Scheme. Through this work, she has contributed to strengthening academic mobility, collaboration and capacity development among African institutions and researchers.
Her commitment to African scientific collaboration is further reflected in her experience as a visiting scholar and mobility postdoctoral researcher at Makerere University's School of Agriculture and Environmental Sciences in Uganda. This experience has contributed to her growing engagement with African research networks and reinforced her interest in collaborative, transdisciplinary approaches to addressing shared sustainability challenges across the continent.
Dr Materechera-Mitochi has published research on South African farming systems, agricultural production, sustainability and water-related environmental challenges. Her scholarly work includes publications examining the characterisation of farming systems in the Vhembe District, the drivers of agricultural production, and the application of systems dynamics and scenario approaches to sustainable agricultural futures. Her research has appeared in journals including Frontiers in Sustainable Food Systems, Agriculture and Urban Ecosystems. She is also committed to making science accessible beyond academic audiences and has contributed to public science communication through The Conversation, where she has co-authored two articles, one on the complementary roles of small- and large-scale farms in South Africa's food system and another on why water right alone are not enough to fix South Africa’s deeply unequal farming sector.
Science communication and public engagement form an important part of her professional identity. In 2021, she was recognised as a top three finalist in the Wits University final heat of the FameLab International Competition for science communication. She has also contributed to conversations on the future of African sustainability science, serving as a lead speaker for a conference breakout session on how African early-career researchers can shape African sustainability science innovation at the Sustainability Research and Innovation (SRI) 2024 Satellite Event in Durban, South Africa.
Throughout her career, Dr Materechera-Mitochi has also been actively involved in teaching, postgraduate supervision, training and capacity development. Her professional experience includes working as a Teaching Assistant at the University of the Witwatersrand, an accredited Training Facilitator, an Environmental Compliance Intern at Sedibeng Water, and in mentoring and research support roles at Rhodes University. She has developed expertise in postgraduate supervision, qualitative research methods, project administration, training and facilitation, assessment and moderation, public speaking, report writing and causal loop diagram development using systems thinking tools.
Her academic achievements have been recognised through several competitive scholarships, fellowships and honours, including an NRF Doctoral Scholarship, a Rhodes University African Studies Centre Postdoctoral Research Fellowship, and postdoctoral funding through the Water Research Commission of South Africa's Emerging Researcher Acceleration Programme in partnership with EWSETA. She is also a member of the Golden Key International Honour Society in recognition of top academic achievement.
As an African woman scientist, Dr Materechera-Mitochi is committed to contributing to the advancement of science that is collaborative, inclusive and responsive to the development challenges facing the Global South. Her work is motivated by the recognition that complex challenges such as water insecurity, agricultural transformation, environmental degradation and inequality cannot be addressed through disciplinary approaches alone. She therefore advocates for systems-based, transdisciplinary and co-created approaches that bring together researchers, policymakers, practitioners and communities in the pursuit of transformative and sustainable solutions.
Her membership in the Organisation for Women in Science for the Developing World would provide an important opportunity to strengthen connections with other women scientists across Africa and the Global South, foster interdisciplinary and international research collaborations, and contribute to the advancement and visibility of women in science. She is particularly interested in engaging with networks that promote scientific leadership, mentorship, capacity development and research collaboration among women scientists working on sustainability, water governance, agriculture and development.
Through her research, leadership and commitment to capacity development, Dr Materechera-Mitochi aims to contribute to a new generation of African scientists whose work not only advances knowledge but also contributes meaningfully to sustainable development, social equity and transformative change across the continent.
