About me
Hirusha Wanigasingha is a Lecturer in Computer Science, currently pursuing an MPhil in Computer Vision and Sports Analytics. She specializes in machine learning, computer vision, and data-driven modeling. She earned her BSc (Hons) in Computer Science with a Second Class Upper Division and has industry experience as an intern Machine Learning Engineer at Dialog Axiata PLC, contributing to MLOps and R&D projects.
Her academic contributions include multiple research publications, including a conference paper on feature selection for spam detection and a project creating a dataset of Sri Lankan coins. As a lecturer, she supports student growth through teaching, seminars, and tech-education content. She remains dedicated to advancing AI and sports analytics research.
Hirusha Wanigasingha is a computer science professional with a strong passion for artificial intelligence, data-driven solutions, and technology education. She graduated in 2024 with a BSc (Hons) in Computer Science from the University of Sri Jayewardenepura, earning a Second Class Upper Division with a GPA of 3.63. During her undergraduate studies, she developed a deep interest in machine learning, image processing, and predictive modeling, which later shaped both her academic work and early professional contributions.
She gained hands-on industry experience during her internship as a Machine Learning Engineer at Dialog Axiata PLC, where she worked in the Analytics and AI division. Her work involved creating an MLOps CI/CD template and contributing to an R&D initiative called Retailer Brand Analysis, which focused on identifying campaign regions through machine-learning-driven image analytics. This exposure strengthened her skills in developing end-to-end ML pipelines and deploying them in production environments.
Hirusha has also engaged in impactful academic research. Her paper, titled “Optimizing Feature Selection in Spam Email Detection Using Co-Evolutionary Algorithms,” was presented at the SLAAI International Conference in 2024. Additionally, she has developed a curated image dataset of Sri Lankan coins and is preparing a research publication based on this project. Her research interests continue to expand toward computational biology, feature selection algorithms, and predictive modeling.
Beyond research and engineering work, Hirusha is committed to teaching and knowledge sharing. She currently serves as a Lecturer in the Department of Computer Science at the University of Sri Jayewardenepura. She also conducts seminar series to guide computer science students about the technology landscape in Sri Lanka, academic pathways, and research opportunities.
Her enthusiasm for community education extends to creating online tutorials, videos, and content related to artificial intelligence, machine learning, AWS technologies, and general tech guidance. She has produced several educational videos, including coverage of local AI conferences, coding tutorials, and introductions to foundational data science concepts.
Hirusha is also building her portfolio as a developer, with experience in Python, R, Keras, TensorFlow, Flutter, and cloud platforms such as AWS. She actively maintains machine learning and software development projects on GitHub, including an end-to-end student performance prediction pipeline.
Looking forward, she aspires to pursue postgraduate studies, particularly a PhD in the fields of machine learning, Bioinformatics or data science. Her long-term goals include contributing to impactful research, advancing innovative AI solutions, and continuing to empower students and young professionals through teaching and mentorship.
