About me

I am a PhD researcher in Biotechnology at the University of the Western Cape, with a background in microbiology, biochemistry and nanoscience. My research interests lie at the intersection of nanotechnology, molecular biology and infectious disease diagnostics. My current doctoral research focuses on developing a nanoparticle-based aptamer rapid diagnostic platform for Mpox, with the aim of contributing to accessible diagnostic technologies for early disease detection, surveillance and outbreak control. I am particularly interested in applying interdisciplinary scientific approaches to address healthcare challenges in resource-constrained settings.

My current doctoral research focuses on the development of a nanoparticle-based aptamer rapid diagnostic test for Mpox, with the aim of contributing to accessible, sensitive and field-deployable diagnostic technologies for early disease detection, surveillance and outbreak control. This work integrates molecular biology, nanotechnology and diagnostic development, and has the potential to support public health preparedness and responses to emerging infectious diseases in South Africa and beyond.
Previously, I completed an MSc in Nanoscience at the University of the Western Cape, where I investigated the therapeutic potential of green-synthesised metal nanoparticles in an in-vitro model of non-alcoholic steatohepatitis (NASH). I obtained my BSc Honours in Microbiology, focusing on HIV-1 drug resistance sequencing and molecular characterisation, and a BSc in Microbiology and Biochemistry.
My research interests include nanobiotechnology, molecular diagnostics, infectious diseases, and the application of sustainable and interdisciplinary approaches to improve human health. I am passionate about translating laboratory research into practical solutions that can strengthen diagnostic capacity and healthcare outcomes, especially in underserved communities. I am also committed to mentorship, capacity building and contributing to a more inclusive and equitable scientific community.
