About me

Dr. Lubna M.A. Hassan is a distinguished Wildlife Research and Conservation Specialist with over 18 years of experience in biodiversity, genetics, and wildlife management. She currently serves as the Director and Research Assistant Professor at the Wildlife Research Center in Khartoum, Sudan, where she leads pioneering research on biodiversity conservation and wildlife management. Her expertise encompasses field surveys, population trend analysis, habitat selection studies, genetic research, and wildlife monitoring, employing advanced tools such as camera traps, transect analysis, and ecological assessments to generate critical data for conservation planning and evidence-based decision-making.
Throughout her career, Dr. Hassan has made significant contributions to wildlife research and conservation, particularly in Sudan. She has led numerous projects focusing on wild honey bees, small mammals, and endangered species such as the Nubian Ibex and Dorcas’s gazelle, as well as keystone species including the lion, Roan antelope, and greater Kudu within Biosphere Reserves. Her work also extends to international collaborations on avian influenza, migratory soaring bird conservation, and the strengthening of protected areas in Sudan. Her scientific outputs are widely published in peer-reviewed journals, and she actively contributes to the scholarly community not only as an author but also as a peer reviewer for international journals, including Academia Molecular Biology and Genomics and Academia Biology.
Prior to her current role, Dr. Hassan served as Head of the Wildlife Habitat Department at the Wildlife Research Center in Bahri, Sudan (2015–2019), where she led comprehensive habitat research programs focused on biodiversity assessment, threat analysis, and community-based conservation. These efforts were instrumental in strengthening local community engagement, promoting sustainable environmental practices, and supporting evidence-based policy development.
Dr. Hassan earned her Ph.D. in Genetics and Molecular Biology from the University of Khartoum (2019), with doctoral research centered on genetic diversity, population structure, and conservation breeding programs for the Nubian Ibex. She also holds an M.Sc. in Wildlife Sciences from the Sudan Academy of Science and a B.Sc. in Zoology from the University of Khartoum, providing a strong foundation in ecological and biological sciences.
She has authored over 25 scientific papers and two book chapters, delivered numerous university-level courses, and contributed to capacity-building initiatives. Her leadership and advocacy have facilitated high-level engagement with international organizations including FAO, MAB-UNESCO, CITES, CMS, IFAW, and UNDP, advancing biodiversity and wildlife governance. In recognition of her expertise, she was invited in 2025 to serve as a peer reviewer for Academia Molecular Biology and Genomics (Manuscript ID 4xVy3N) and Academia Biology (Manuscript ID 4NVRxK), reflecting her standing within the international scientific community.
Her outstanding contributions have been recognized through prestigious awards, including a Humboldt University–Berlin Research Fellowship (Germany), the Big Genomic Data Lab Research Fellowship (A&F North-West University, China), and a Travel Bursary Award from ISAG (Spain). Dr. Hassan continues to play a leading role in advancing sustainable biodiversity conservation and environmental stewardship at national, regional, and global levels.
