About me
Dr. Mairim Solís is a Panamanian scientist with a Ph.D. in Biotechnology, specialized in Taiwan and performing research in mesenchymal stem cell research since 2007. She is the current Vicepresident of the Panamanian Association for the Advancement of Science, member of the Natonal Research Bioethics Comittee, member of the Gorgas Bioethics Committe, Board of Director of the Red Iberoamericana de Terapias Avanzadas. In 2017, she established the Stem Cell Research Laboratory at the Gorgas Memorial Institute for Health Studies (ICGES) with the goal of developing and launching, for the first time in Panama at the government level, stem cell research lines complying with bioethical standard for future applications in diseases prioritized by the Ministry of Health. Today, she is a Senior Health Researcher at the Gorgas Memorial Institute for Health Studies, a member of the National Research System, a member of Panama’s National Bioethics Committee for Research, and a professor at the University of Panama. She currently leads the Stem Cell Research Group at the Gorgas Institute, with five research projects focused on the regenerative and immunomodulatory potential of MSCs for future applications in diabetes and inflammatory-related infectious diseases. She has been honored with various awards for her scientific contributions, including the 2020 L’Oréal-UNESCO National Award for Women in Science, the 2020 Enid Cook de Rodaniche Medal from the Rotary Club, and the Keys to the City of Panama in 2018, among others. In the long term, Dr. Solís aims to advance through the various clinical phases using stem cells and their application as regenerative medicine cell therapies accessible to the entire population.
Dr. Mairim Solís is a Panamanian scientist, head of the Stem Cell Research Group at the Gorgas Memorial Institute for Health Studies in Panama and an Adjunct Professor at the University of Panama. She is the current vice president of the Panamanian Association for the Advancement of Science. She obtained her Ph.D. in Biotechnology from the National Cheng Kung University in Taiwan and Postdoctoral studies from KU Leuven in Belgium, with experience in stem cell research since 2007. She completed her undergraduate studies at the National Pingtung University of Science and Technology in Taiwan, obtaining in 2009 a degree in Animal Production Engineering with Summa Cum Laude honors and awarded with the first prize in academic excellence from the China Agricultural Association. During her last two years of bachelor’s degree, she was granted her first research funds from the Ministry of Science in Taiwan for studies on the differentiation of embryonic stem cells to oocyte-like cells for infertility treatments. The therapeutic potential of stem cells in regenerative medicine motivated her to specialize in this field, pursuing her master's and doctoral studies at the Laboratory of Biomedical Technology at National Cheng Kung University in Taiwan, where she acquired many years of experience with placenta-derived mesenchymal stem cells and the effect that biomaterials exert on the mitochondrial and bioenergetic machinery of stem cells, obtaining her doctoral degree in 2016. In 2017 she joined th Gorgas Memorial Institute for Health Studies in Panama, with the purpose of establishing for the first time in Panama at the government level, a laboratory for Stem Cell Research for future applications in diseases prioritized by the Ministry of Health. Today she is a Senior Health Researcher at ICGES, a member of the National Research System, a member of the Scientific Committee of ICGES, a Member of the National Research Bioethics Committee of Panama, and Professor at the University of Panama. She currently leads the Stem Cell Research Group at ICGES, undergoing five research projects for future applications in Diabetes and COVID-19, under the financial support from various national and international funding sources, such as the Panamanian National Secretary of Science, Technology and Innovation (SENACYT), the Ministry of Economy and Finance (MEF), and the British Embassy in Panama. She has served in several policy revision meetings for the legal and ethical use of stem cells in Panama. She has been awarded various awards for her scientific contributions in Panama and Latin America, such as the national award L´Oreal UNESCO for Women in Science 2020, Enid Cook Rodaniche Medal 2020, Latin American Leader in Biotechnology 2018, received the Keys of Panama City in 2018, among others. At the long term, Dr. Solís aims in advancing in the different clinical phases for the application of stem cells from the bench to the bedside accessible to the entire Panamanian population.
