MAITUMELO GAIKITSE
About me
I graduated with a First Class honors in 2018: Bachelor of Science degree in Animal Science (Ruminant Stream) from Botswana University of Agriculture and Natural Resources in 2018. My undergraduate studies focused on addressing key challenges in sustainable livestock production, including efficient feed utilization, animal nutrition, and health management. Through comprehensive coursework in livestock production systems, genetics, animal nutrition, and biochemistry, coupled with practical field training, I developed skills essential for improving livestock productivity and mitigating nutritional deficiencies in Botswana’s livestock sector.
Currently pursuing a Master of Science degree in Animal Science with a specialization in Animal Nutrition. The MSc coursework and research emphasize mineral, vitamin, carbohydrate, and lipid metabolism, regulation of nutrient intake, and applied ruminant nutrition. This work contributes to sustainable animal production systems, promoting food security and economic development through better livestock productivity.
I am Maitumelo Gaikitse, an animal science professional dedicated to advancing sustainable livestock production and animal nutrition research in Botswana. I graduated with First Class Honors in Bachelor of Science in Animal Science from Botswana University of Agriculture and Natural Resources in 2018, with a specialization in the ruminant stream. During my undergraduate studies, I focused on key challenges affecting livestock productivity such as feed efficiency, animal health, genetics, and nutritional quality. My research projects involved evaluating physical and sensory characteristics of rabbit meat, which aimed at improving the quality and marketability of local breeds raised under intensive systems. Throughout my academic journey, I developed strong skills in animal health management, disease control, and the practical aspects of livestock production, including traceability and humane slaughter practices.
Currently, I am pursuing a Master of Science in Animal Science, specializing in Animal Nutrition, at the same institution, where I am conducting research using different diets for poultry feeding. My MSc studies expand on my expertise in digestive physiology, nutritional toxicology, and metabolism, equipping me with advanced analytical and research skills such as statistical analyses using SAS and experimental design. Beyond my academic qualifications, I have practical experience as an animal scientist in veterinary offices and municipal abattoirs, where I contributed to disease surveillance, clinical animal care, and regulation enforcement.
Passionate about community engagement, I have volunteered in various capacities, including computer literacy coaching and assisting in vaccination campaigns for domestic animals in my home village. I continuously seek to expand my knowledge and skills with certifications in climate change, entrepreneurship, and various aspects of livestock production, reflecting my commitment to developing solutions that enhance food security, animal welfare, and economic growth within Botswana and beyond.
