María Fernanda Gutierrez

About me

For the past 30 years, I had served as a Professor of Virology and researcher at Pontificia Universidad Javeriana in Bogotá, Colombia. Since 2016 my academic career has been closely integrated with science journalism. I host a radio show on Javeriana Estéreo where I interview prominent scientists, and I also write a regular column dedicated to scientific topics. I retired from my virology activity and started a new job working for the science communication.

"I am a Bacteriologist with an MSc in Biology, an MA in Communication, and a PhD in Biological Sciences. I served as a Full Professor at Pontificia Universidad Javeriana until 2021 and am recognized as a Senior Researcher within a Minciencias A1-rated group. Currently, I lead INNCISO SAS, a science management firm dedicated to fostering scientific culture across the country.

My research and outreach efforts have resulted in 66 scientific articles, more than 50% of which are ranked in the Q1 quartile by the Ministry of Science, Technology, and Innovation. In terms of public engagement, I have authored over 48 outreach articles for national magazines, appeared in numerous television segments—primarily regarding COVID-19—and produced various podcasts. I also host Bitácora, a science communication radio program on Javeriana Estéreo that has been on the air for nine years."
