About me

I am a chemist and environmental public health researcher with a PhD in chemistry from Rhodes University and currently an innovation postdoctoral fellow at the University of Pretoria's School of Health Systems and Public Health. My interdisciplinary research integrates analytical chemistry, environmental epidemiology, and sustainable water treatment technologies to improve drinking water quality and protect public health. I currently lead a research project investigating emerging contaminants in drinking water, particularly disinfection byproducts, through the development of innovative analytical methods and sustainable adsorbent materials. My work combines LC-MS/MS and GC-MS analysis, environmental exposure assessment and evidence generation to support improved water quality management and policy development. In addition to research, I have extensive experience in laboratory analysis, scientific project management, postgraduate supervision, university teaching, stakeholder engagement and scientific communication. I am passionate about applying scientific innovation to improve water service delivery, environmental sustainability and public health outcomes, particularly in South Africa, Lesotho, and other African countries. As a young academic, I am currently supervising 5 honours students, 3 master's students and 1 PhD student. I also have a collaborator in Tunisia for the water disinfection by-products project.

I am a materials and analytical chemist and environmental public health researcher with a PhD in Chemistry from Rhodes University. I currently hold an Innovation Postdoctoral Fellowship at the University of Pretoria's School of Health Systems and Public Health. My interdisciplinary research integrates materials and analytical chemistry, environmental epidemiology, and sustainable water treatment technologies, aiming to improve drinking water quality and protect public health, particularly in South Africa, Lesotho, and the wider African region.
During my doctoral studies, I focused on the synthesis, characterization, and photophysical investigation of aza-BODIPY and porphyrin-based photosensitizers, including their conjugation to gold nanoparticles. My research explored their applications in photodynamic anticancer and antimicrobial therapies, targeting breast cancer cells (MCF-7) and bacterial pathogens such as Staphylococcus aureus. This work incorporated advanced molecular modeling and the study of non-linear optical properties.
Before my PhD, I completed an MSc in Chemistry at Rhodes University, where I developed BODIPY and porphyrin dyes and their inclusion complexes for photodynamic therapy and antimicrobial uses. My foundational training includes a BSc Honours and a BSc in Chemistry and Geology, both from Rhodes University, where I gained expertise in dye synthesis, nanoparticle conjugation, and photophysical characterization.
In my current postdoctoral role, I lead a research project investigating emerging contaminants in drinking water, with a focus on nitrosamines as disinfection by-products. I develop innovative analytical methods using LC-MS/MS and GC-MS, alongside sustainable polymer adsorbents to capture these contaminants. My work encompasses environmental exposure assessment and evidence generation to support water quality management and inform public health policy. I collaborate internationally, including with partners in Tunisia, to advance this research.
I have extensive experience in laboratory analysis, scientific project management, postgraduate supervision, and university teaching. I currently supervise five honours students, three master's students, and one PhD student.
My teaching experience includes holding a lecturing assistance role at the School of Health Systems and Public Health at the University of Pretoria and lecturing and tutorial facilitation in physical chemistry, where I implemented innovative instructional methods that improved student performance. I have also served as head demonstrator at Rhodes University and contributed to curriculum revision and student mentoring.
My publication record reflects my expertise in photodynamic therapy, dye synthesis, and electrocatalysis. I have received several awards, including the National Research Foundation Innovation Postdoctoral Fellowship, the Pearson-Young Memorial Scholarship, the Sigma Aldrich Prize for best Honours student, and the James Moir Medal for top student in Honours from the South African Chemical Institution.
Beyond academia, I actively engage in community outreach and science communication, facilitating workshops at national science festivals and mentoring young scientists.I have been a guest speaker on topics including breast cancer awareness and women in science. I am committed to continuous professional development, having completed training in postgraduate supervision, academic induction, and scientific writing. My academic and research mentors include Professors K.V.V. Voyi, John Mack, and Distinguished Professor Tebello Nyokong, reflecting a strong professional network and mentorship.
I am passionate about applying scientific innovation to enhance water service delivery, environmental sustainability, and public health outcomes across Africa.
