About me

Dr. Nyasha Makuve is an accomplished chemist and educator with expertise in inorganic chemistry, materials
chemistry and pure chemistry. She currently serves as a Lecturer in Inorganic Chemistry at the University of
Botswana, where she also coordinates several undergraduate and postgraduate modules and supervises MSc
and PhD research projects. With a strong interdisciplinary foundation in chemistry and education, Dr. Makuve’s
academic journey spans a PhD in Chemistry from the University of Johannesburg, an MSc in Material Chemistry
and BSc (Hons) in Chemical Technology from Midlands State University. She also earned a Master of Education
in Higher Education and a Postgraduate Diploma in Higher Education from Botho University, alongside assessor
and moderator certifications from the Botswana Qualifications Authority.

Dr. Makuve’s research interests focuses on sustainable catalysis, organometallic chemistry, metal-organic
frameworks (MOFs), green chemistry and biomass valorization. She has authored and co-authored over 19
peer-reviewed articles in international journals, along with a book chapter. Her recent work includes catalytic
transformation of biomass-derived compounds and development of novel metal complexes for environmental
and medicinal applications.
She has represented the University of Botswana at various prestigious platforms such as the Pan Africa
Chemistry Network Congress held in Kenya and the Early Career Commonwealth Chemistry Congress held in
Trinidad and Tobago. Notably, she presented her doctoral work on catalytic hydrogenation of CO₂ at several
international chemistry conferences and international symposia in South Africa, Botswana and Italy.
Dr. Makuve is also the recipient of notable awards, including the Artificial Intelligence in the 4IR Achievement
Award (University of Johannesburg, 2023) and the NRF-TWAS Doctoral Fellowship. Her professional affiliations
include Associate Member of the Royal Society of Chemistry (AMRSC), editorial board member for several
journals and Member of IUPAC, SACI, OWSD, BSPCA, and Golden Key International Honour Society
Beyond academia, she is committed to science outreach and community engagement, donating awards to
young chemists in Botswana and participating in university roadshows and animal welfare activities.
Dr. Makuve is a dedicated mentor, educator, and researcher whose work contributes meaningfully to the
development of sustainable chemical technologies and higher education excellence in Southern Africa and
beyond.
