To commemorate the International Day of the Girl Child, the OWSD OAU Branch continued its annual School Outreach Programme โ€” an initiative we began in 2022 to inspire young girls to embrace mathematics with confidence.

This year, we revisited our partner schools โ€” Adventist Secondary School and Ife Girlsโ€™ High School, Ile-Ife โ€” where we have been engaging students since their first year in junior secondary school. It was heartwarming to see how far they have come!

Our focus remains the same: to dispel the fear of mathematics, a subject that forms the foundation for all disciplines โ€” whether science, arts, or commerce.

  • With the JSS1 students, we emphasized the importance of developing a positive attitude toward mathematics from the start.
  • With the JSS2 students, we demonstrated how a good textbook can be a powerful learning tool. Through interactive problem-solving exercises, we showed them how mathematics can be mastered independently with consistent practice.
  • Finally, for the JSS3 students, we discussed subject selection for senior secondary school, highlighting how their choices align with potential university courses and career paths.

We sincerely appreciate our dedicated postgraduate members of OWSD OAU, whose commitment, creativity, and teamwork made this outreach a success. Their passion for inspiring the next generation truly drives the vision of our branch.

As part of our long-term goal, we plan to follow up with these students during the International Day for Women and Girls in Science in February 2026, to assess their progress and continue encouraging them on their academic journey.

If you would like to support this initiative โ€” for instance, by donating mathematics textbooks to help students develop self-learning skills โ€” please contact us at owsd.oauife@gmail.com.

Together, we can empower more girls to see mathematics not as a challenge, but as a pathway to limitless opportunities.
