New OWSD National Chapter established in Morocco

March 18, 2021

Morocco becomes the 36th country to create a National Chapter of OWSD.

OWSD members in Morocco in March 2021 officially established a new OWSD National Chapter. The National Chapter is the 6th in the Arab region, and the 37th National Chapter worldwide. The Chapter is hosted by the Al-Sahm Women organization in Casablanca.

The first Executive Committee of the National Chapter is formed by:

Vice-Chair: Adra Idrissi, University Sultan Moulay Slimane
Secretary: Khadija Haiker, University Hassan First
Treasurer: Hafssa Melhaoui, Natixis Bank

"Our main goal is to increase and promote women's participation in science and technology professions, in scientific leadership and in decision-making process at the national level," said the National Chapter's Executive Committee. "Establishing a Moroccan National Chapter of OWSD will have a long-lasting positive impact on the personal development of our members, especially on their self confidence and on enhancing their knowledge acquisition in a global context. It will allow them to establish new cooperation with OWSD members from the rest of the world and broaden their own specialist knowledge."

The National Chapter intends to work with all levels of society to develop science-based activities that address national concerns, including food security, water security, and gender equity, and to provide networking opportunities for, as well as to promote the involvement and participation of, Moroccan women in science and technology.

At the time of establishment, OWSD had 30 members in Morocco. Women scientists in Morocco who are not already members of OWSD can become members here. Members who are interested in joining the National Chapter are invited to contact Ilham Abidi at ilhamormvam [at] gmail.com.
