The University of Medical Sciences and Technology (UMST) in Kigali, Rwanda, has successfully established a Molecular Biology Laboratory, which became operational on 20 November 2025, marking a significant step forward in strengthening national research and diagnostic capacity.

The laboratory was developed as a concrete outcome of capacity-building support provided through an OWSD PhD Fellowship undertaken by Dr. Sahar Gamal Elbager Mohamed. It builds on advanced molecular biology training Dr Mohamed received at Universiti Putra Malaysia (UPM), alongside specialised programmes delivered by the International Centre for Genetic Engineering and Biotechnology (ICGEB) and the European Molecular Biology Laboratory (EMBL).

Commenting on the milestone, Dr. Mohamed said: “This laboratory represents a tangible outcome of the capacity-building investment provided through my PhD fellowship from the Organization for Women in Science for the Developing World (OWSD).”

The Molecular Biology Laboratory is managed by Dr. Mohamed and focuses on research, training, and service delivery. It is open to researchers, students, and institutions, and is designed to serve as a consultation and resource hub supporting ongoing and future scientific projects across Rwanda and the region.
