Professor Nafisat Afolake Adedokun-Shittu
About me
Nafisat A. Adedokun-Shittu is a Professor of Educational Technology at the University of Ilorin, Nigeria. She holds a PhD and Master’s degree in Instructional Technology and a Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology. Her research interests include educational technology, educational neuroscience, artificial intelligence in education, computational thinking, innovation, curriculum development, and sustainable learning. She leads the GLOCALISE and BrainFarm initiatives and has published extensively in educational technology and related fields.
Professor Nafisat Afolake Adedokun-Shittu is a Professor of Educational Technology at the University of Ilorin, Nigeria, with a multidisciplinary academic background spanning Instructional Technology, Information Technology, Mass Communication, Education, and Computer Science, complemented by international and local academic experience in Malaysia and Nigeria. She holds a PhD and Master’s degree in Instructional Technology, a Bachelor’s degree in Information Technology, a Higher National Diploma in Mass Communication and a Postgraduate Diplomas in Education and Computer Science. She has authored and co-authored more than 60 scholarly publications, including journal articles, book chapters and conference papers, and has served as a reviewer, editor, examiner, resource person and mentor. Her academic career has earned international recognition, including participation in Harvard University’s Centre for Research on Computation and Society Workshop on Artificial Intelligence for Social Impact in 2020 and an International Higher Education Teaching and Learning Editor’s Choice recognition.
Her research leadership focuses on technology-enabled, context-sensitive and impact-oriented approaches to education. She is the Lead Researcher of the TETFund-supported GLOCALISE research initiative, which advances the principle of teaching content in context and problem-solving the African way. Through GLOCALISE, she has led initiatives including GLOCALISE ILORIN (2018), GLOCALISE KWARA (2023), and GLOCALISE GOWN, TOWN AND CROWN (2024), reaching and training more than 1,000 teachers. Her current research portfolio includes GLOCALISE Tools and Curriculum copyright, the GLOCALISE Projector, Climate Action Curriculum, TETFund-supported and Unilorin Senate Research Grant BrainFarm and the BrainFarm Educational Neuroscience Model (BENM), artificial intelligence and low-resource/local-language content generation, indigenous knowledge systems, digital inclusion, and climate-conscious education. These initiatives integrate research, curriculum development, innovation, entrepreneurship, intellectual property and community engagement to address locally relevant educational and societal challenges.
Professor Adedokun-Shittu’s work is characterised by the translation of educational research into practical innovations with institutional, community and policy relevance. Her wider scholarly interests encompass educational neuroscience, artificial intelligence, augmented and visualisation technologies, computational thinking, technology impact assessment, glocalisation, indigenous knowledge, digital empowerment, green technologies and outcome-based learning. She has contributed to UNESCO-related consultations on the ethics of neurotechnology, collaborated with UNESCO Associated Schools Network (ASPNET) and other education and innovation partners, and facilitated more than 20 professional development and research workshops. Her innovations have received recognition at national and international exhibitions, while GLOCALISE Tools and Curriculum have been registered with the Nigerian Copyright Commission. Her overarching aim is to advance African-centred educational innovation by transforming research and indigenous knowledge into scalable, sustainable solutions aligned with the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) and African Union Agenda 2063.
