About me

Dr. Agnes Mbonyiryivuze is a Rwandan physicist and Physics Education researcher with a PhD in Physics Education. Her research focuses on STEM education, renewable energy education, students’ engagement and conceptual understanding, and gender and STEM career pathways. She is also a university physics lecturer, researcher, and mentor committed to advancing inclusive, innovative STEM education and promoting greater participation of girls and women in science and technology.

Dr. Agnes Mbonyiryivuze is a Rwandan physicist, Physics Education researcher, university lecturer, and STEM education advocate with a PhD in Physics Education. Her academic and professional work focuses on improving the quality of physics and STEM education through innovative, evidence-based teaching and learning approaches.

Her research interests include students’ conceptual understanding and engagement in physics, renewable energy education, project-based learning, STEM aspirations and career pathways, gender and participation in STEM, and factors influencing students’ self-efficacy and educational and career choices. Her work particularly explores how educational experiences, social influences, role models, and perceived barriers shape young people’s engagement with STEM, with a strong interest in the Rwandan and broader African context.

Dr. Mbonyiryivuze has experience teaching physics at university level and conducting research in science and STEM education. She has contributed to research and academic projects addressing STEM career development, gender-related challenges in STEM, innovation, and the use of practical and project-based approaches to enhance students’ learning. She is also involved in mentoring and supporting students and early-career researchers in academic research and scientific communication.

Through her teaching, research, and professional engagement, Dr. Mbonyiryivuze is committed to advancing inclusive and innovative STEM education and strengthening opportunities for girls and women in science, technology, engineering, and mathematics. Her broader goal is to contribute to the development of scientific capacity in Rwanda and other developing countries by supporting evidence-based educational practices, encouraging young people to pursue STEM pathways, and promoting the visibility and advancement of women in science.
