Dr Anna Msigwa
About me
Dr. Anna Haji Msigwa is a Lecturer and Researcher in Hydrology and Water Resources Engineering at the Nelson Mandela African Institution of Science and Technology (NM-AIST), Tanzania. Her research focuses on climate change adaptation, water governance, and the application of remote sensing and machine learning in water resources management. She is an OWSD Early Career Fellow (2022), a Laureate of AWARD’s One Planet Fellowship, a Fellow of the U.S.-Africa Frontiers of Science, Engineering, and Medicine (NASEM), and a Carnegie Corporation Fellow. Dr. Msigwa is also a member of the Global Young Academy and an alumna of the Future Africa Research Leadership Fellowship (University of Pretoria). She has received multiple recognitions for her contributions to science and mentorship of young women in STEM.
Dr. Anna Haji Msigwa is a Lecturer and Researcher in Hydrology and Water Resources Engineering at the Nelson Mandela African Institution of Science and Technology (NM-AIST) in Arusha, Tanzania. She holds a Ph.D. in Water Engineering, and her research specializes in climate change adaptation, transboundary water governance, and the integration of remote sensing and machine learning for water resources management.
Dr. Msigwa has secured multiple competitive fellowships and awards. She is a 2022 OWSD Early Career Fellow, a Laureate of the African Women in Agricultural Research and Development (AWARD) One Planet Fellowship, and a Fellow of the U.S.-Africa Frontiers of Science, Engineering, and Medicine Symposium (NASEM/University of Arizona). She was also selected as a Carnegie Corporation New York–African Studies Association (ASA) Fellow, and is an alumna of the prestigious Future Africa Research Leadership Fellowship (FAR-LeaF) at the University of Pretoria.
Her academic contributions are widely recognized; she is a member of the Global Young Academy, has received awards for excellence in environmental engineering in Tanzania, and has led projects funded by international organizations, including the development of AI-powered drought early warning systems and climate-health research initiatives.
Beyond her research, Dr. Msigwa is committed to advancing gender equity in science and uplifting the next generation of women leaders. She serves as the Vice Chairperson of the AWARD Tanzania Chapter, where she helps bring together women in agricultural sciences to share experiences, build networks, and recognize achievements. She is also an active member of the Tanzania Chapter of the Organization for Women in Science for the Developing World (OWSD), mentors female students at NM-AIST, and organizes initiatives such as awards for young girls excelling in science subjects at the primary level.
Through her combined work in research, mentorship, and policy engagement, Dr. Msigwa is advancing both scientific innovation and inclusive capacity building in Africa’s water and climate sectors.
