Augusta Chinyere Nsonwu-Anyanwu is a Professor of Clinical Chemistry and Immunology, Faculty of Medical Laboratory Science, University of Calabar, Nigeria. She holds a Bachelor of Medical Laboratory Science (BMLS, Chemical Pathology) with Second Class Upper Division (1998) and a Master of Science degree in Chemical Pathology (2005) from the University of Calabar. She obtained her Ph.D. in Basic Medical Sciences with specialization in Chemical Pathology/Immunology from the University of Ibadan in 2012 and earned a Certificate in Immunology from the University of Ibadan/Institute of Immunology Luxembourg, Germany in 2007. She is actively engaged in teaching, research, student supervision and mentorship and community development. She has participated in more than 30 conferences and workshops and has authored over 70 publications in reputable peer-reviewed journals. Her contributions to University and Community service are notable. She has served as Examination Officer, Postgraduate Programme Coordinator, Head of Department, and Pioneer Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Medical Laboratory Science.
Her research excellence has attracted numerous grants and fellowships, notably as Principal Investigator for the National Institute for Cancer Research and Treatment (NICRAT) SINCCAR Grant (2025-2026), the Joint Academy of Science/Bibliotheca Alexandrina Egypt Research Grant (2020–2023), the Tertiary Education Trust Fund (TETFund) Institutional-Based Research Grant (2018–2020) and the Organization for Women in Science for the Developing World (OWSD) Doctoral Fellowship Award, Chinese Academy of Science Shanghai, China, 2009-2011. She has also received multiple international travel awards from the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation, International Union of Toxicology (IUTOX), Organization for Women in Science for the Developing World (OWSD), the Union for International Cancer Control (UICC), Federation of Clinical Chemists/European Federation of Clinical Chemists (IFCC/EFCC), International Union of Immunological Societies (IUIS) and Federation of African Immunological Societies (FAIS).
Her research spans Molecular Oncology, Immunopathology, Reproductive health, Infectious Diseases, and Environmental Toxicology. She has investigated the roles of hormones, immunological factors, oxidative stress, and environmental toxicants in infertility, diabetes, HIV, malaria, and tuberculosis. In cancer research, her work has examined the expression of protein antigens, hormones, growth factors and receptors, oxidative DNA damage, and pre-neoplastic indices as biomarkers for diagnosis, prognosis, and treatment monitoring in breast and prostate cancers. She has also evaluated occupational and dietary exposure to environmental carcinogens and estimated lifetime cancer risk. She remains committed to capacity building, mentorship, and advancing evidence-based strategies in cancer prevention and environmental health.
