Dr Eno Udo

Eno Udo is an accomplished academic and researcher with a multidisciplinary background in Biochemistry, Environmental Health Management, and Environmental Toxicology. My academic and professional career has focused on understanding the interactions between environmental contaminants, biological systems, public health, and environmental safety, with particular interest in toxic substances, environmental exposure, and their effects on human and animal health.

I began my academic journey at the University of Uyo, where he obtained a Bachelor of Science (B.Sc.) in Biochemistry from 1997 to 2002. My undergraduate research focused on Nutrients and Toxicants Found in Locally Made Snacks Sold in Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria. This early research experience provided a foundation in food safety, nutritional biochemistry, toxicology, and environmental health, while developing my interest in the effects of potentially harmful substances on biological systems.

I subsequently pursued a Master of Science (M.Sc.) in Environmental Health Management at the University of Uyo from 2007 to 2010. My master's research, titled “Identification, Characterization and Quantification of Medical Waste in Some Health Institutions in Akwa Ibom State, Nigeria,” examined issues relating to healthcare waste generation, characterization, management, and associated environmental and public health concerns. The study further strengthened my expertise in environmental health, waste management, exposure assessment, and environmental protection.

Driven by a desire to deepen my expertise in environmental toxicology, I obtained a Ph.D. in Environmental Toxicology from Michael Okpara University of Agriculture, Umudike, Abia State, between 2018 and 2024. My doctoral research, titled “Assessment of the Effects of Moringa oleifera and Cymbopogon citratus Leaves Extract on Wistar Rats Exposed to Toxic Heavy Metals,” investigated the biological effects of heavy-metal exposure and evaluated the potential protective or mitigating effects of selected medicinal plant extracts. The research reflects my interdisciplinary expertise in toxicology, biochemistry, environmental contamination, experimental biology, and public health.

Professionally, I have accumulated substantial teaching and academic experience in tertiary education. I served as a Lecturer at Akwa Ibom State College of Agriculture, Obio Akpa, Nigeria, from 2006 to 2011, where I contributed to teaching, student development, and academic activities. Since 2012, I has been a Lecturer in the Department of Chemical Sciences at Akwa Ibom State Polytechnic, Ikot Osurua, Ikot Ekpene, Nigeria. In this capacity, I have contributed to teaching, research, student supervision, academic administration, and departmental development. Between 2022 and 2025, I served as the Examination Officer for the Department of Chemical Sciences, where I coordinated departmental examination activities and supporting the effective administration of academic assessment. Since March 2025, I have served as Head of the Biochemistry Unit, providing academic and administrative leadership while contributing to the coordination of teaching, research, and other departmental activities.

My research interests encompass environmental toxicology, biochemistry, environmental health, heavy-metal toxicity, food and environmental contaminants, biological effects of toxicants, environmental pollution, and risk assessment**. His academic trajectory demonstrates a consistent progression from biochemical investigation of food constituents and toxicants, through environmental health and waste-management research, to advanced investigation of environmental toxicants and their biological effects.

I am a member of several professional organizations, including the American Chemical Society, the Nigerian Society of Biochemistry and Molecular Biology, the West African Society of Toxicology, and the Society of Basic and Clinical Toxicology, Nigeria. These professional affiliations provide opportunities for continued engagement with developments in biochemistry, toxicology, environmental health, research, and related scientific disciplines.

Overall, my career reflects a sustained commitment to higher education, scientific research, environmental health, and toxicological sciences. Through my teaching, research, academic leadership, and professional engagement, I continue to contribute to the development of scientific knowledge and the training of students in biochemistry and related environmental and health sciences, particularly within the Nigerian context.
