Eugenia Corrales-Aguilar, virologist

About me

Eugenia Corrales-Aguilar, is a Costa Rican Microbiologist with a PhD in Virology from the Humboldt University in Berlin, Germany. Dr. Corrales-Aguilar is the Coordinator of the Virology in the Tropical Diseases Research Center (CIET) from the Faculty of Microbiology at the University of Costa Rica. Prior experience regarding viral diseases such as herpesviruses and immune evasion, tropicalized herself after returning in 2010 to Costa Rica after her PhD and PostDoc studies. With vast experience on topics of vector-borne diseases, including dengue field surveys of wildlife such as bats, study of human immune response against arboviruses and molecular epidemiology of human dengue and other arboviruses have been her main topics of interest. Her research focuses on Arboviruses (Dengue, Zika, West nile, Chikungunya, and other alphaviruses): immunology, molecular epidemiology, natural reservoirs, and the interface between wildlife and arboviruses; on neotropical Bats and Bat-borne viruses; and on SARS-CoV2 serology such as surrogate assays for measuring neutralizing antibodies. She has Science Diplomacy training from the AAAS in Washington and from the University of Sao Paolo, Brasil. She was the expert in medical virology of the COVID-19 Technical Group, Disease Surveillance, Ministry of Health, Government of Costa Rica from 2020-2023.
She is the coordinator of the ARBOred, which is a project that aims to support acquisition of funds for arbovirus research in Costa Rica. She is a National Science Price Clodomiro Picado Twight awardee in 2014. She received the institutional medal from the University of Costa Rica for her contributions in research and scientific communication during the SARS-COV2 Pandemic.
