Professor Folashade Afolabi
About me
Folashade is a Professor of Physics Education, focusing on building capacity development programs and curricula for teachers’ professional development. She specializes in exploring the integration of innovative technologies to enhance students’ learning outcomes in physics across cultures and for disadvantaged groups, supporting sustainable development. With over fifteen years of experience in Higher Education, she teaches, researches, and trains teachers and lecturers in impactful 21st-century learning skills, digital learning, and future learning. Her expertise includes mentorship, curriculum design, development and adaptation, Open, Distance and e-Learning, human resource sourcing, stakeholder engagement, event and exhibition planning, and community service. Her commitment to education and professional development is aimed at developing science learners who achieve expected outcomes and positively impact the emerging educational landscape.
Professionally, she is a member of the Association of Commonwealth Universities’ Roster of Experts and serves on the panel for peer review of the Commonwealth curriculum framework for SDGs. She has successfully organized or co-organized high-profile training sessions in technology integration, as well as projects and conferences that have involved participation from the public, civil society, and the private sector.
Folashade is a multiple award- and grant-winning scholar and an ardent researcher with several publications. She serves on the editorial board of international peer-reviewed journals, holds affiliate and leadership positions in national and regional academies, sits on advisory boards and boards of trustees for international education NGOs, and is the founder of the JOEWIN Sickle Cell Foundation. She is an advocate of SDGs 4,5 and 10. She is a Professor at Distance Learning Institute, University of Lagos.
Folashade Afolabi is a Professor of Science Education at the Distance Learning Institute of the University of Lagos. She holds both a Master’s degree and a PhD in Science Education from the University of Ibadan. She has served as the Deputy Director of Academic Planning and Development and as the Acting Head of the Department of Science Education at the Distance Learning Institute. As a seasoned scholar, Professor Afolabi has published extensively in numerous books and journals. She is also an external examiner for universities both in Nigeria and internationally, as well as a member of the editorial boards of various local and international journals. Her current research focuses on AI-driven innovations aimed at reshaping education, while underscoring the importance of inclusive policies, Distance and e-learning, lifelong education, capacity building, and collaboration among stakeholders to create resilient and future-ready learning environments for inclusive, sustainable development.
Professor Afolabi is a member of several learned societies, including the International Council of Distance Education (ICDE), the Teachers Registration Council of Nigeria (TRCN), the International Society for Teacher Educators (ISFTE), the Curriculum Organization of Nigeria (CON), the South African Council of Educators (SACE), and the South African Institute of Physics (SAIP), among others. Her research interests include online learning, gender inclusiveness, improving the academic achievement of physics learners, curriculum development and adaptation, instructional design of contents, and technology-enhanced education, particularly in physics. She has contributed to reputable journals in these areas.
