About me
Marta Montero, also known as Cecilia Montero Aravena is a Chilean physicist and materials scientist. She holds a Bachelor’s degree in Applied Physics and a PhD in Engineering Sciences, major in Materials Science and Engineering, from Universidad de Santiago de Chile. She is currently a postdoctoral researcher at Pontificia Universidad Católica de Valparaíso, supported by an ANID Fondecyt Postdoctoral project, where her research focuses on surface modification of magnesium for temporary cardiovascular implants. Her work connects materials science, corrosion, surface engineering, polymeric coatings, and biomedical applications. Cecilia is also a university lecturer, thesis supervisor, science communicator, and mentor in initiatives that promote the participation of girls and women in STEM.
Cecilia Montero Aravena is a Chilean physicist and materials scientist. She holds a Bachelor’s/Licentiate degree in Applied Physics and a PhD in Engineering Sciences, major in Materials Science and Engineering, from Universidad de Santiago de Chile. Her academic background combines physics, materials science, surface science, electrochemistry, corrosion, and the development of functional coatings for technological applications.
Her doctoral research focused on the surface modification of magnesium alloys using argon plasma treatments to improve the adhesion of PMMA polymeric coatings. This work was motivated by the potential use of magnesium-based materials in lightweight transport applications, where reducing structural weight can contribute to lower fuel consumption and improved energy efficiency. Her research also addressed the need for more environmentally friendly surface treatments as alternatives to conventional chromate conversion coatings.
Cecilia is currently a postdoctoral researcher at Pontificia Universidad Católica de Valparaíso, supported by an ANID Fondecyt Postdoctoral project. Her current research focuses on the surface modification of magnesium for temporary cardiovascular implants, particularly through strategies aimed at improving the adhesion, stability, and degradation behavior of biodegradable polymeric coatings. Her work connects materials science, surface engineering, corrosion control, and biomedical applications.
In addition to her research, Cecilia is a university lecturer at Universidad de Santiago de Chile, where she teaches physics courses to undergraduate students. She is also involved in thesis supervision and in the training of students and early-career researchers at Pontificia Universidad Católica de Valparaíso, contributing to the development of advanced human capital in materials science and related fields.
Cecilia is actively involved in science communication, mentoring, and initiatives that promote the participation of women and underrepresented groups in STEM. She participates in scientific and professional networks such as Red de Investigadoras, Women in Engineering USACH, and Vectoras USACH. She is also a mentor in PROVOCA, an AUI/NRAO program that supports girls and young women interested in science and engineering.
Through her academic, research, teaching, mentoring, and outreach activities, Cecilia aims to contribute to the development of advanced materials with social, technological, environmental, and health-related impact, while also helping to build more inclusive scientific communities.
