About me

I am an emerging biochemist with a strong interest in food systems, analytical science, and laboratory quality standards. I have experience in laboratory analysis, food safety, and research support, and has been involved in teaching, outreach, and organizing scientific activities. My passions include: improving food quality, extending shelf life using scientific innovation, and advancing Africa’s agricultural and food systems. I am intentional, resilient, and committed to building a career that strengthens scientific capacity across communities

My name is Nneamaka Valerie Okpah. I am a biochemist who is intentionally building a career in food systems, analytical science, and quality management. At this stage of my life, I am focused on growth (not rushed), but steady, deliberate, and purposeful. I am shaping myself into the kind of scientist who understands both the technical work and the real-world impact behind it.
I grew up in a farming community, a place where food was once abundant and simple. Watching that change over the years planted a strong curiosity in me. I want to understand food better (why it spoils, how we can preserve it), how science can support farmers and communities, and how we can return to a time when food was not a struggle. That interest guides a lot of the choices I make today.
I have worked in laboratory environments where I handled analysis, sample preparation, documentation, and quality-aligned processes. Every experience has taught me something ,precision, responsibility, patience, and the importance of standards. I am someone who learns fast, pays attention to detail, and keeps improving herself. I am resilient, analytical, and very intentional about the person I am becoming.
I am also serious about community, teaching, and scientific communication. I enjoy helping others understand things clearly and supporting people around me. Even when I am not in formal leadership, I naturally step into roles where I organize, guide, or connect people.
Right now, I am committed to expanding my knowledge, strengthening my skills, and positioning myself for more opportunities in research, food science, and laboratory quality systems. Joining OWSD is part of that growth. I want to connect with other women in science, learn from mentors, and be part of a community that challenges and inspires me.
This is who I am; grounded, intentional, and steadily becoming the scientist I envision.
